Low Polar Pressure Creates Traffic Problems – NRK Troms and Finnmark – Local News, TV and Radio

The night before Sunday, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute recalled the hazard warnings that were sent out on Saturday and downgraded the warnings.

Several mountain passes were closed Saturday night and people were encouraged not to go out.

The low polar pressure announced on Saturday morning created traffic problems in several places in northern and central Norway.

Cautions Small Boat Owners

The rescue company warns of very strong winds in the Trondheim Fjord and parts of Nordland. They ask small boat owners to check boats both on land and at sea, and they ask people to be careful when going out onto docks and piers.

Diversion through Finland

In Troms, the E6 over Kvænangsfjellet is closed due to the risk of avalanches. The road will not open on Saturday, but a new evaluation will take place on Sunday at 10 am.

This means that Finnmark is isolated from Norway. The only way to enter or exit is through Finland.

Finnish authorities opened on Saturday night to drive through Finland on the Kilpisjärvi – Kivilompolo stretch without triggering a quarantine obligation.

The permit is valid until March 8 at 00:00, and is assessed by the Finnish border guard in each individual case. The opportunity is primarily intended for business travelers.

It is the second time in the last two weeks that the only road to / from Finnmark on Norwegian soil has been closed due to bad weather.

E6 over Saltfjellet closed at 01 o’clock last night and was still closed at 4 o’clock due to the storm.

Also closed in southern Norway.

Mountain passes in southern Norway had also been sour Sunday night. Highway 7 over Hardangervidda was closed for a period, but was reopened last night for column driving, before closing again.

On National Highway 52 over Hemsedalsfjellet, tonight there is column driving. There is also column driving on the E134 over Haukelifjell. Both the county road 53 Tyin – Årdal and the county road 50 Hol – Aurland are closed due to bad weather.

Of the great mountain passes between East Norway and West Norway, only the E16 over Filefjell is fully open.

– Stay at home

Storm surges also cause very difficult driving conditions on Trøndelag’s roads. Several mountain passes are closed and the jungle snow is causing problems in Trondheim as well.

Large crews are clearing the roads in central Norway.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration asks for it to be understood that it may take time to clear roads in snowy weather.

The low polar pressure will hit the earth, even if it is somewhat weakened. This is noticeable throughout the entire Trondheimsfjord.

– The weather has varied a lot throughout the day, from heavy sleet to slippery roads and now snowdrifts. There is very little visibility, especially on the mountain passes, but also on our main roads.

Erling Drangsholt, a traffic operator at the Road Traffic Center in Trondheim, told NRK on Saturday night.

– Right now there is a driver who makes it better to be calm at home. If you have to get out and drive, take it easy. So far no serious accidents have been reported, but there have been some downhill races and minor accidents.

Trondheim city center

There was a modest turnout in downtown Trondheim on Saturday night. Perhaps it is not so strange, when meteorologists encourage people to stay home due to the expected storm.

No buses run

The road is also closed at Skjervøy in Troms. Here, there has been an avalanche on County Highway 866. A new evaluation was announced here on Sunday at 12 noon.

In Lofoten, all bus departures are canceled on Saturdays. Also in Vesterålen, several departures have been canceled, reports Reis Nordland.

Roads and ferry connections are also closed, says traffic operator Christer Berntsen at Vegtrafikksentralen in Mosjøen.

Fylkesveg 813 over Beiarfjellet also opened after being called up from Saturday morning. Rv 77 over Graddis is closed on the Swedish side, reports the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

– Several trucks have also got stuck, says Berntsen, who describes the weather as “jib and rock.”

Among other things, Fv 76 over Tosenfjellet was closed on Saturday morning after a truck ran into problems.

Berntsen encourages people who will be cycling during the storm to prepare. In addition to checking the traffic reports on the Norwegian Public Road Administration website, it is a good idea to pack a little more.

– Take a shovel, good clothes and food and drink in the car, says Berntsen.
