The musician, whose real name is Richard Wayne Penniman, turned 87 years old. The son, Danny Pennniman, confirms the death of Rolling Stone magazine.
The Guardian writes that Richard has had health problems in recent years. Among other things, he has had strokes, heart attacks and hip problems, according to the newspaper.
The sheriff of the city of Macon, in the state of Georgia, where he was from, has so far not responded to questions from the British newspaper.
Little Richard bassist Charles Glenn tells celebrity website TMZ that Penniman has been ill for two months and died at his Tennessee home with his brother, sister, and son present.
Glenn had spoken to him in March and was invited to visit him, but was unable to travel due to the crown situation.
Massive influence
In Rolling Stone magazine, Little Richard is described as the founder of Rock and Roll, and he inspired, among other things, Elton John and The Beatles with their musical style.
Little Richard’s biggest hit came in the 1950s with “Tutti Frutti”, “Long Tally Sally” and “Rip it Up”. It had no further successes in the top ten after 1958, but its impact was massive, according to Rolling Stone.
He became known for his stage style with makeup eyes and colorful clothing, according to The Guardian. Prince later followed in his footsteps.
Penniman retired from rock music in 1957 and graduated as a priest. In 1959, he released a gospel album called “God is Real,” writes the newspaper.
