Three schools and a handball team in Lillestrøm are affected by a new outbreak of the mutation of the British crown. Two of the schools will be temporarily closed.
Several cases of infection have already been confirmed to be of the British variant.
– We sent samples and got a response last night. Three of them are UK viruses, says chief physician Bettina Fossberg Dagbladet.
In total, there are 14 positive samples in the outbreak and nearly 300 are in quarantine. The municipality expects more positive results for the British mutant over the weekend.
Will prove
Nine students from three schools are infected. The rest are close contacts of the students.
– We have a proportion of unknown infections in the municipality, but we have no indications that there is wild contagion due to this outbreak, says the municipal chief.
The quarantine period for most ends next Monday. The municipality will retest those in quarantine after the outbreak is known to be with the British mutation. A temporary test station will be installed to test them.
Source of infection cleared
Fossberg believes they have control over the outbreak.
– It is a clarified source of infection and those infected are quarantined, he says and adds:
“We handled it from the start as a possible mutated virus with current guidelines,” says Fossberg.
The municipality expects to test up to 300 people on Friday and expects test results this weekend.
A total of 1911 corona infections have been recorded in Lillestrøm since the start of the pandemic.
