Emergency services moved to the apartment complex in Sarpsborg after a report of a confirmed fire in an apartment at 6:45 p.m.
It was the neighbors who discovered the fire and alerted the emergency services.
– Other residents discovered which apartment was on fire, but did not contact anyone inside. The fire department had to break into the apartment, says Task Chief Sindre Dahlstrøm in the NRK East Police District.
Inside the burning apartment, smoke divers found a person dead. The person was rescued and health personnel quickly began life-saving first aid.
– The person was breathing but was not conscious when transported to Østfold Hospital, says Operations Manager Gisle Sveen in the Eastern Police District.
The police were unaware of the person’s condition at 8:30 p.m.
Probably burned for a while
The fire itself must have been confined to one apartment and is now under control. Other nearby apartments have been affected by the smoke.
Police are now working to question neighbors and secure the doors of several apartments they had to break into.
Task leader Dahlstrøm brags about residents who acted quickly when they discovered the fire.
– They have done a great job notifying the emergency services and quickly begin the evacuation themselves. We are very happy about that, he says.
About 80 people live in the apartment complex. Police first reported that they had all been evacuated, but Operations Manager Sveen stated at 7.15pm that they did not have an overview of how many had been evacuated.
– But we are sure that none of the neighbors in the nearby apartment has been forgotten, he says.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. He will be investigated by police forensic technicians on Monday.
– But the apartment has the mark of having caught fire. There is a lot of soot and it probably burned for a while before it was discovered, says Sveen.
