Large stones fall towards residential houses in Aurland – NRK Vestland

– We sat in our office and worked a little late when we heard it started to rumble, Inge Skahjem Tofastrud said.

The family of four had to move out of the house in Skaim in Aurland and to a neighboring family after it collapsed in their yard last night.

– He roars almost a minute before he leaves. When it calms down, we light up the patio and are greeted by shingles that have fallen from the roof due to a shallow rockfall. We also see that there have been rockslides on the roof of the barn, says Tofastrud.

After a visual experience with the firefighters, they discover giant rocks 100-150 meters from the buildings.

– It is a miracle that they have not gone down more. Now, in the light of day, you see the enormous forces that have been at work, he adds.

Sogn Avis reports the case first.

A geologist must make an assessment.

– There are quite large boulders that have come down from the mountainside. They have not hit buildings, but debris has hit the roof of a residential house and barn and has blown a hole, Aurland Mayor Trygve Skjerdal told NRK today.

– No one was injured, added Skjerdal.

The mayor explained that the area where the landslide occurred is a known landslide area. The stones must have come from the top of the hillside and cut through a forest.

Before dinner, it will be considered whether the family can return. The geologist and the drone pilot go to Skaim to see

– Now the municipality is meeting. We are waiting for the police and we will also contact a geologist, then an assessment will be made of what we will do next, says the mayor.

The size of a car

Bjørn Sture Rosenvold lived on the neighboring farm and also got stones near his property.

– They just entered the field behind the house here. It is not that far, one of the stones is very large, he says.

Rosenvold estimates that one of the stones is the size of a car. He is not surprised that it has collapsed so much.

How crushing is it in Skaim?

– It’s in the red area. It is an old residence here. Because the mountainside is so close, there will always be danger of falling rocks. Usually it sits on the clock, but now it’s down further, he says.
