Three days after the rapid clay landslide in Gjerdrum, Swedish firefighters, health service, police and rescuers will enter the avalanche area.

– We have worked hard during the night and continue to work tirelessly. We are in a rescue operation, it is important to highlight that, says operations manager Roy Alkvist during the press conference.

He claims that flights were made last night over the landslide area, without any findings.

I should go into the red zone

Alkvist says they now plan to enter the lower part of the red zone in the landslide area.

– It is an operation with a certain risk, but here we do it based on NVE analysis. USAR team crews, fire, health and police will enter the area, it says and continues:

– We want to check part of the mass of the building and see that with the help of a paver it is possible to enter part.

The defense also helps in the rescue operation. As soon as your paver is in place, it will begin operation to enter the area.

According to Alkvist, a paver is a heavier vehicle that has the ability to place a steel bridge, which is so long and wide that personnel and equipment can be dispatched.

When asked if he can elaborate on the risk of such an operation, the task leader explains that there is of course a certain risk.

– Therefore, we depend on having a large crew to possibly withdraw quickly.

Alkvist says it is too early for him to say anything about whether the buildings they will enter on Friday belong to some of the people who have not been counted.

Situation still unstable

The Norwegian Directorate for Water Resources and Energy will carry out laboratory investigations to assess the evacuation area at Gjerdrum. There is still the risk of landslides.

– It is important to report that with the help of drone images last night we see that there have been new bombings in the avalanche pit. There is still an unstable situation in the avalanche pit that needs to be closely monitored, says Toril Hofshagen at NVE at a press conference Friday morning.

She says it is considered prudent to carry out careful investigations at ground level in the landslide area on Friday. But there is still the danger of further landslides, Hofshagen notes.

Ten unaccounted for

As of Friday morning, there are still ten people who have not been counted after the landslide. Until now, it has been too unsafe for search teams to search with ground crews.

It is still snowing in the avalanche zone on Friday morning.

– We operate and prepare to bring ground personnel. We haven’t done it yet, and we hope we get it today, task leader Ketil Lund tells VG.

The plan is to dispatch the group of Swedish rescue experts who have come to Gjerdrum, along with the Norwegian dog trainers.

– We have more to play in, but we have to think about safety, because, as I said, it is a dangerous area, says operations manager Lund.

Looking for survivors

The operation in Gjerdrum still has the status of a rescue operation where a search for survivors is being conducted. Police warn that searches of the ground will be concentrated in the areas where living people are most likely to be found.

The search night until Friday yielded no results.

– Search teams have not made any discoveries. Last night’s search was carried out with drones, says Operations Director Karianne Knutsen in the Eastern NTB Police District.

She emphasizes that they still have hope of finding people alive. Late Thursday night, one of the dogs that had disappeared after the landslide was found safe and sound.

Must pierce

On Thursday night, several people were evacuated after finding large cracks in the ground in an area north of Ask in Gjerdrum. NVE is now planning further investigations in the evacuated areas, writes Dagbladet.

– NVE is working in the evacuated areas around. They are drilling to observe the stability of soil conditions, operations manager Tom Sandberg tells the newspaper.
