NEW YORK (Dagbladet): – It is heartbreaking that in 2020, an African American man is lynched, Bottoms told CNN on Sunday.
Arbery, 25, was running in Glynn County, South Georgia, when he was shot and killed on February 23. Just Thursday, three months later, a father (64), former police investigator Gregory McMichael and his 34-year-old son Travis, arrested for the murder after a video of the incident was released.
The murder has affected large parts of the United States.
Crucial video
According to a police report, father and son allegedly chased Arbery in a van because they suspected that he was behind several robberies. The video that appears shows how the son shoots Arbery with a shotgun. Bottoms does not believe the two would have been arrested if the video had not been released.
– I definitely think that’s why they were accused. If we hadn’t seen that video, I don’t think they would have been charged, says Democratic Mayor Bottoms.
She believes that the problem of racism is at the top of the United States.
“By the rhetoric we hear from the White House in many ways, I mean that many who are racists are allowed to be so loud,” Bottoms told CNN.
Two videos
On Saturday, The Atlanta Journal Constitution also released a new video, which allegedly shows Arbery shortly before he was killed. In the video, a person stops at a house under construction. The person enters the house and leaves again after a short time.
Arbery’s family attorney, Lee Merritt, confirms that they believe the person in the video is Arbery.
– He was not involved in anything illegal and only stayed for a short period. Ahmaud took nothing from the construction site. It did not cause any damage to the property. The video shows that the murder of Arbery was not justified, and that the actions of the men, who ambushed him, were not justified, Merritt writes in twitter.
The owner of the house, which is under construction, Larry English, tells the Washington Post that it has not been stolen.
– It’s totally wrong. I never reported anything to the police or stolen anything from my property, he tells the newspaper.
Three state attorneys
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the case, arrested father and son McMichael on Thursday on charges of murder and serious violence. This happened three months after the incident.
The fact that it took so long was due in part to two state attorneys who reported incompetence because they had previously been connected to McMichaels, a former police investigator.
Local officials in Glynn County are now requesting a federal investigation, alleging that the two allegedly disabled state attorneys also privately asked police to defer or not arrest their father and son McMichaels, the Washington Post writes.
Gregory McMichaels previously worked as an investigator for the State Attorney’s Office. Before that, he worked as a police investigator.
A third state attorney originally announced that he wanted to present the case to a grand jury, but then the horrible video appeared.
Thirty-six hours later, the case was transferred to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and both father and son were arrested.
– Very scandalous
The case has created violent waves in the United States, even at a time when the coronavirus is completely dominant on the news scene.
Trump told the television show “Fox News Friday” on Friday. The interview is reproduced by Politico, among others:
– I’ve seen the video, and it’s very, very annoying, he says.
The president says he is under the impression that Arbery was a “nice young man.”
– It is an annoying situation, and my thoughts are with my parents, family and friends. Just as completely, the police must investigate it, he says.
Trump adds that he is confident that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp will follow up on the matter.
– The governor will watch you closely. But it is heartbreaking. Tough, says the president.
Kemp commented on the video Thursday.
– Earlier this week I saw the video showing Arbery’s last moments in life. It is absolutely terrible, and the people of Georgia deserve answers, Kemp said during a press conference, according to NBC News.
