– As a member of the EU, the Swedes have looked after our interests.

Kai Eide is one of Norway’s most famous diplomats. He has been an ambassador to Sweden, the OSCE and NATO, as well as a UN envoy to Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Afghanistan. He was also a special envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the French case in the Congo. He is now chairman of the board of the Norwegian-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, an organization that will safeguard and strengthen commercial interests between the two neighboring countries.

The 71-year-old now comes out and praises the efforts of the Swedes to help Norway in the fight against the coronavirus.

– Now I think we should thank Sweden. As a member of the EU, the Swedes have looked after our interests. We get a lot more Covid-19 vaccines than expected and sooner than we think, some of them are Eide on LinkedIn.

Vaccinations to Norway

This summer, it became clear that Norway would receive coronary vaccines through Sweden, as Norway could not purchase vaccines through the EU vaccine agreement. Sweden then managed to get the other EU member states to release about 3 percent of their vaccines, so that the EEA countries could also buy. The “middle man” in all of this has been the Swedish vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström.

– Norway can buy one percent of the entire EU quota. Sweden can buy two percent. Sweden manages the actual resale to Norway, but it is the entire EU that shows solidarity with Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, Bergström said in September.

– Invaluable role

The former top diplomat now hopes that Norway can further recognize what Sweden has done.

– Prime Minister Erna Solberg has already sent a thank you to the Swedes. It is completely in place and the Swedes appreciate it. Other ministers who are also involved should also do the same, Eide tells Nettavisen.

In a statement to Nettavisen, the Ministry of Health and Care Services writes the following about cooperation and assistance from Sweden.

– Sweden has played an invaluable role in ensuring access to vaccines in Norway and deserves great thanks. Norway is linked to the EU agreements through resale agreements with Sweden, and there is considerable work in the Swedish Ministry of Social Affairs behind the preparation of these agreements.

– At the same time, the Swedish vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström has safeguarded Norway’s interests in the EU negotiations, where all member states have neglected one percent of their vaccine dose volume to ensure deliveries to Norway, says Saliba Andreas Korkunc, political advisor to the Minister of Health and Care Bent Høie. Svein Andersen, 67, became the first person in Norway to receive a coronary vaccine:

More collaboration

Eide now hopes that this collaboration can be a door for further collaboration in other areas.

– I hope Norway and Sweden do more together in research and industry. With the new technology, there is also a basis for even better collaboration. The pandemic is one thing, but we also have a climate crisis. We can look for smart infrastructure solutions and smart energy solutions. Basically, we can do much more together, is the clear message of the top diplomat.
