On Friday morning, the police operational management specialist participated in the inter-agency check together with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority and NAV at a juice producer in the Oslo area.
– The first impression was moldy fruit and bad air, write the police in a post about the control on their Facebook page.
According to the police, the company delivered “unhealthy juices to hotels and restaurants.”
The inspection also found several failures and deficiencies associated with the fire protection, ventilation and electrical systems, according to the police, who also write that the manufacturer was unable to present a risk assessment or an action plan related to infection control.
Hastestengt
The business was closed by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority through an urgent decision.
– Among other things, we discovered a lot of moldy and rotten fruit. The cold room was not working and there were many fruit flies on the premises. There was mold on the ceilings and walls of the fruit storage room, and dirty floors and equipment in the production. Also, soap and paper were missing from the staff toilet sink, Håvard Johansen from the Norwegian Food Safety Authority’s department in Oslo, Asker and Bærum tells Dagbladet.
It adds that improper cleaning can cause unwanted microorganisms to grow and spread to products, which in turn can make products unsafe to eat.
– Bad for health
– Juices are products that do not require any heat treatment before consumption and therefore it is important that the products are free of harmful microorganisms. When it comes to mold, this should not happen in these types of products, he emphasizes.
Furthermore, it says the results “demonstrate a lack of understanding of the importance of good hygiene and satisfactory operation, raw materials and equipment.”
– We evaluated that the hygienic conditions were not conducive to the activity that was carried out there, and that there was an imminent danger of contamination of the juice that was produced. Therefore, there was a danger that the juice would be dangerous to health.
Intervening
Therefore, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority made an urgent decision that they had to stop all production and sales.
– Closure decisions are an intrusive tool and are only used in cases where we consider it dangerous to eat food. A sales ban was also imposed on some products. In order to reopen, the company must have improved conditions, Johansen tells Dagbladet.
