Japan Increases Disaster Preparedness: Requests 8 Million Evacuees – NRK Norway – Summary of news from different parts of the country

Up to 8 million people are said to have been ordered to evacuate from their homes.

By early Sunday, that number was 1.6 million.

People have been advised to seek refuge in certain places of refuge in places like schools and community centers, but local media reports that not everyone is following the call. Out of fear of the coronavirus, some have moved to local hotels.

The typhoon is expected to increase in strength in the next few hours. Heavy rain, storm surge and winds of up to 100 miles per hour are expected, according to the BBC.

Canceled trains and planes

According to NTB, Typhoon Haishen is the 10th to hit the country so far this year.

It passed the island of Okinawa further south on Saturday and then moved north past the island of Amami-Oshima early Sunday.

Evacuation orders were issued and strong winds and high waves were noted. The roofs were taken over by the wind and power outages affected the area.

Later on Sunday, the typhoon continued towards the largest island of Kyushu with strong winds and rain. At least 142,000 homes are reported to be already without power.

Most are now closed in the western part of Japan. Factories and schools have closed their doors. Hundreds of flights and trains have also been canceled.

Warn residents

Meteorologists urge residents to be very careful and warn of possible record rainfall and very high waves along the coast.

Just a few days ago, Typhoon Maysak devastated Japan. Then a freighter with 43 people on board sank. It was then one of the most powerful typhoons in the region in several years. Haishen follows roughly the same course as Maysak a week ago.

In South Korea, where the typhoon is expected to hit on Monday, the disaster and security headquarters raised the country’s typhoon alert level to four, the highest, on Sunday.
