A few months ago, critics said that Sheffield United had paid a premium for Sander Berge (22). Now the question is how long the club can keep its best player.
The Asker boy became the most expensive signing in club history when he was brought in from Genk for around NOK 250 million in January. The first months in England were tough: convulsions, tactical challenges and criticism marked the time before the crown put an end to football.
– Sheffield United spent a lot of money on it, and that worries me, football journalist Daniel Storey said on the popular podcast The Totally Football Show in June.
Now the pipe has a different sound. Despite Sheffield United being last in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s meeting with West Ham, Berge has stood out as a bauta, with eye-catching performances against big clubs like Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Now it’s no longer about the price tag, but where the journey goes, especially if your club goes down at the end of the season.
– We understand that. The £ 20 million we paid for Sander is not a big deal for a player like him. We thought it was cool, because we haven’t been in that market for 25 years, but now it’s nothing. Sander was a fantastic signing for us. We want him to grow with us, but we understand that the big clubs care when he performs so well. That means we, and Sander, are doing something right, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told VG.
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp spoke openly about his love for Berge even before reaching the Premier League. According to information from VG, Arsenal were also very interested in beating the youngster before he finished at Sheffield United in January. Interest has definitely been unaffected by his accomplishments in recent months.
– People judged Sander when we hired him. They expected everything to happen immediately. There were some harsh opinions about him. People thought it would not be a success in the Premier League, but it has turned it upside down. Sander has been our best player this season, Wilder continues.
Clearly, he has fallen under the spell of the 22-year-old, who has established himself as both a midfield anchor and an inside runner.
– I just have to say: Sander has been unique. He is the one who has stood out for us, says Wilder and continues:
– He’s a complete midfielder. You can play as 8 and 6. You can play in different formations. What’s wonderful about Sander is his attitude. You could say you want to play in one place and not another, but you don’t see any downside to being versatile. Complete midfielders are like that. Look at Jordan Henderson (player of the season in the Premier League last season). Sander should be extremely confident that he can play so well in various positions in the Premier League.
