It was so stupid to take your mobile phone to the theory test

For many, the theoretical exam they have to pass to obtain a driver’s license is more difficult than the actual drive-up. There are a number of laws and rules that must be learned, and in certain situations there may be small margins between the correct and incorrect answers.

Last year, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration published figures showing that up to 51% failed the theoretical test.

For some, therefore, it may be tempting to try cheating, to make the path to a driver’s license a little easier.

But it can be punished quickly.

Stronger punishment

On New Year’s Eve, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration introduced stricter penalties for cheating on the theory test.

So far, three people have been quarantined for seven and nine months for cheating or attempting to cheat on the theory test.

– Our goal is that no one is killed or seriously injured in traffic. We are therefore actively working to detect cheating, to prevent drivers with potentially very poor theoretical knowledge from entering traffic, says department director Frode Børstad at the Norwegian Public Highway Administration.

Hidden ear plug

One candidate was quarantined for nine months because he tried to complete the theoretical exam with a hidden earplug, with a cable for a hidden cell phone.

– This case shows that the Norwegian Public Roads Administration reacts strictly even if the candidate has not cheated, as long as we can prove cheating attempts, says Børstad.

Another candidate was quarantined for 7 months for bringing a mobile phone into the testing room, but the Norwegian Public Roads Administration could not prove that the candidate had actually used the mobile phone.

– Just bringing a mobile phone into the rehearsal room can give a quarantine of 7 months, says Børstad.

May have to wait up to a year

Previously, cheating was treated in the same way as beatings, you were given a two-week quarantine period if you cheated on the theory test. You now have a 3-12 month quarantine if you cheat or try to cheat.

The duration of the quarantine is set based on severity.

Less serious cheating is punishable by a three to nine month quarantine, and may be the use of a cheat note or mobile phone to search for answers during the theory test.

Severe deception is often organized in nature and punishable by a 10-12 month quarantine. Examples of serious cheating are the use of electronic aids to get help during the test, having the test carried out by someone other than the candidate, or having the person film and take pictures of the test for later use.
