A more contagious virus could force Europeans to return home. It could have financial consequences in the coming months.

Reports of a variant of the coronavirus in the UK that could be 70 percent more contagious have already prompted a local shutdown in southern England. Many countries, including Norway, have closed air traffic to the UK.
But it may already be too late to prevent the virus variant, which was first discovered in southern England in October, from spreading further. Similar virus mutations have already been found in the Netherlands, Denmark and Iceland. According to the European Infection Control Agency, media reports indicate that it has also appeared in Belgium and Italy, and there is a danger that it already exists in several other places.
