– It is striking that Trump opposes his own.

The number of votes in the House was 322 to override the veto and 87 against, well above the two-thirds of the votes needed for the bill to pass.

This means that about half of the Republicans chose to vote against Trump and join the Democrats in voting.

– It’s very sensational. We have a drama where Trump drives a golf cart and is angry. You can no longer influence bills. He is only concerned with the story that he has lost the election illegally, says Eirik Bergesen, American expert on TV 2.

There are several reasons why Trump vetoed. He is not satisfied with the fact that the budget does not imply the elimination of a law that provides legal protection to social networks like Facebook and Twitter. He also strongly opposes ten military bases changing their names, as they are named after controversial southern generals.

– But now Congress and Republicans are opposing their own president, continues Bergesen.

The Senate, which also requires a two-thirds majority, is expected to vote the same way later this week.

The vote is a humiliating defeat for the president. If the decision is the same in the Senate, it will be the first time that Congress overrides a Trump veto.

– Now they do their job

On Christmas Eve, Trump vetoed the $ 740.5 billion defense budget, despite the fact that it was approved by a large majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

– We see that the Republicans can if they want. They may not agree with Trump, but they have not opposed him. But now, in the end, we see that it is quite possible for Republicans to do their democratic job by voting against their own president, says Hilde Restad, an American commentator on TV 2.

The fact that they are now voting against their own president is something that is a clear change in this presidency.

– In general, party members can go against their own president. It’s not unheard of otherwise, but in the Trump period, it’s not something we’ve seen before, he says.

Challenge for Biden

Acting President Joe Biden says the Trump administration is obstructing efforts to seize power in a way that threatens American security.

Restad believes that the biggest challenge for Biden is a party that does not cooperate.

– Biden’s biggest challenge is the radicalization of the Republican Party. We saw in the Obama era that it is difficult to change something, because you have to work with the Republicans. It will be Biden’s biggest challenge, Restad says.

Bergesen says Biden must deal with a much tougher party than Obama.

– The United States is not so divided, but Republicans have divided along Trump’s line. While Democrats have moved to the center, and the plan that Biden has laid out for his first 100 days is very moderate, Bergesen says.

Protest

Trump is urging his supporters to come to Washington on January 6 to protest Joe Biden’s election victory.

Thousands of Trump voters from different parts of the United States await the protest in the American capital. Participating groups include Women for America First, Stop the Steal, and Proud Boys. Everyone supports Trump’s undocumented claim that the November 3 election was marked by massive voter fraud, and that is why he lost to Biden.

This weekend, Trump sent two messages on Twitter asking people to stand up. At the same time, he called the elections “the biggest scam in the history of our country.”
