When asked if the opening hours of the shops and Vinmonopolet will be extended in December, Health Minister Bent Høie replies that this is not possible.

On Wednesday morning, it emerged that the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) is proposing longer opening hours until Christmas. They believe you can avoid big business and pressure on stores before Christmas.

– This council has also been monitored by the government. There has been a meeting between the Minister of Commerce and Industry and the Minister of Children and Families today and with the parties the feedback from the parties is that they believe this is not necessary, says Høie.

According to the health minister, the stores believe they have good systems to deal with this and do not want to require employees to work beyond normal opening hours during holidays.

– What would have been relevant is to keep the stores open on December 27 as well. For Vinmonopolet, the opening hours are regulated by law, so it is not possible to change them, explains Høie.

Opens for quarantined hotel exceptions

The government also said at the press conference that it will make exceptions to the rules on quarantined hotels.

– We now propose that those who document leases in Norway but who do not live here can stay there during the quarantine period, Justice and Emergency Management Minister Monica Mæland said at Wednesday’s press conference.

Even those who can quarantine in private rooms can avoid quarantined hotels. Then they must have access to their own kitchen and bathroom. People from the same household who travel together can be quarantined together.

The changes apply to people who do not have a permanent residence in Norway and who would otherwise have to quarantine in hotels.

Waiting for a quick change

Mæland points out that the main rule remains that everyone from the so-called red countries must go to quarantined hotels. There are no changes to who is quarantined or how long the quarantine lasts.

The Minister of Justice hopes that the changes can be implemented as soon as possible, but notes that the current rules apply until the changes are in place.

The government stated a month ago that the deductible for quarantined hotels is NOK 500 per night for individuals and NOK 1,500 per night for companies.
