– We are familiar and have recorded that the Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation made a decision after the covid-19 deaths. The person must decide if they want to sue, but it is too early to tell anyone.Bærum municipality social welfare director Kristin Nilsen tells ABC News.
Over four weeks in early summer, twelve people died after being infected by coronavirus. The infection must have occurred during or just after the stay in Vallerhjemmet.
– Above all, our thoughts go to the afflicted, the patients and the relatives. My condolences to everyone who lost one of their own in Vallerhjemmet, says the director of welfare.
– I encourage health professionals who are in contact with family members and survivors to inform about the possibility of requesting compensation from NPE after corona infection in nursing homes. We will do our best to process these cases as quickly as possible, says Jørstad.
“The municipality of Bærum has violated duty”
The city administration will now thoroughly review the county governor’s report.
– Then we will inform the political system about the content of the report and we will give our assessments. Then we will also give a response to the county governor in late January, Kristin Nilsen confirms.
The report states that “the county governor has concluded that the Bærum municipality has violated its duty to organize its activities by failing to ensure proper handling of the situation with the covid-19 outbreak in the nursing home Valler, “writes Budstikka, who was the first to mention the case. .
– Lack of training, various leadership changes, inexperienced substitutes
– But why did it go so bad?
– We have summarized this in our internal review. These include lack of training, various management changes, and the fact that employees were not well-equipped enough to deal with the situation in which many were quarantined. Furthermore, many infected people were detected at the same time. At the same time, surrogates who didn’t know Vallerhjemmet well enough were deployed to help in this situation, explains welfare director Kristin Nilsen.
Outbreak in four nursing homes in Bærum
At most 77 employees were infected or in quarantine when multiple patients lost their lives.
– The employees have done a very good job in a period that was extremely demanding for everyone, emphasizes Nilsen.
– How is the situation in nursing homes in Bærum at the moment?
– We have had outbreaks in several nursing homes in addition to Vallerhjemmet. This applies to Gullhaug and Solvik, where we are in control of the infection. At Hospice and Stabekk nursing homes, there is an ongoing outbreak.
– We are much better equipped now
– What have you learned after all these outbreaks?
– We have experienced that when there is an increase in infection in the population, there is also an increase in infection in nursing homes. Employees, residents and families alike can become infected without even knowing it. But we are now much better equipped than at the time Vallerhjemmet was hit. Also, we now have more knowledge about the virus and the symptoms, which is crucial. Today we have better routines and plans, and we’ve had exercises in all nursing homes, also with a view to deploying additional staff and management, says Nilsen.
– The plans were not enough
– In hindsight, could the deaths have been prevented?
– We were prepared and we had plans, but the plans weren’t enough to deal with all the challenges that came with a strange new virus, responds the director of wellness.
The municipality believes that the county governor’s report largely confirms the findings of the internal review that the municipality conducted in spring 2020.
– This is a serious conclusion, which affects us all, says the director of Welfare.
Vestre Viken HF reports on Tuesday that an elderly person with coronary heart disease has died at Bærum hospital. This is the 16th crown-related death at the hospital.
NPE provides compensation to survivors after corona deaths
Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation now provides compensation to survivors after corona deaths in nursing homes.
– Money cannot replace the loss of life or the pain experienced by the bereaved. What we can contribute is to cover the expenses they have in relation to deaths where the elderly have been infected in an institution. says Rolf Gunnar Jørstad, director of NPE in a press release.
To date, 14 patients and family members have requested compensation related to the corona epidemic. Two have been confirmed and two have been rejected, while most are still waiting for a response.
– I encourage health professionals who are in contact with family members and survivors to inform about the possibility of requesting compensation from NPE after corona infection in nursing homes. We will do our best to process these cases as quickly as possible, says Jørstad.
