Through this window, three inmates managed to get out of the Kristiansand prison on Saturday night.
KRISTIANSAND: – This could be very dangerous. If the one who went outside had fallen on the asphalt, it could have had a tragic result, says prison leader Leif Guttormsen at Kristiansand prison.
On Saturday night, the alarm went off when three inmates broke a window with a wooden bench. The three of them stepped out onto the ledge on the ninth floor.
Police were notified at 6.50 p.m. Two of the fugitives were quickly arrested, while a third man lowered the facade, using only his own strength.
More than 17 minutes
Six floors below, on the roof of the courthouse, the man was surrounded by the police and surrendered. Then it was 19.07.
Leif Guttormsen claims that all three are still in Kristiansand prison.
– We do not want to risk something else happening and we are in the process of transferring them to other prisons. This is where they would like to go. They almost made it, and it could be very dangerous, Guttormsen repeats, relieved that no one was injured.
He explains that for security reasons, employees have orders not to leave and come into physical contact with inmates outside. This is to prevent escalation of a situation that could cause someone to fall and / or be injured.
– I followed the book
The job of transferring the inmates has not landed. The current prisons are in Arendal, Stavanger or Åna.
– Is the security of Kristiansand prison good enough?
– It was a terrible experience, but they could not escape. We got alarms and went quickly on the spot. Everything was done according to routines and according to the book. Fortunately, we rarely experience escape attempts, Guttormsen says.
– Do you want to review the incident and assess what went wrong when it first happened?
– We had a longer meeting with employees yesterday. It is clear that escapes are something that should not happen, and this is also noted in the Directorate (Directorate of Prisons and Probation, Journal. Note). That being said, I mean there is little to be gained by looking at routines. I don’t know what we could have done differently. What happened yesterday is that three cooperated, and it was so fast that they managed to break the window, says Guttormsen.
The evacuation attempt took place approximately one hour before the regular night shift. Between seven and ten employees were on duty. A dozen police officers participated in the action to apprehend the fugitives and arrest them.
Be notified
– Was this planned?
– It is not good to say. To put it this way: When three people enter the same room and start, I doubt it was due to an injection, says Leif Guttormsen.
On Sunday morning, the three involved in the escape attempt had not yet been questioned, according to operations manager Vidar Arnesen in the Agder police district.
The prison administration will report the attempted escape over the weekend. The sentence is up to six months in prison.
The man who came down and was arrested on the third floor was taken into custody, charged with a serious crime, while trying to escape. The other two were in less serious circumstances. All three are local residents.
There are currently around 30 prisoners in the Kristiansand prison, the total capacity is 44. The prison is about to close and the prisoners will be transferred to the new prison in Mandal.
