On Thursday, The Washington Post reported that incoming US President Joe Biden will appoint Deb Haaland as Home Secretary.
On Saturday, Joe Biden confirmed that he is nominating Haaland for the position of minister.

Haaland says growing up as a member of the American Indian group Laguna Pueblo has strengthened her.
– My life has not been easy. “I’ve battled homelessness, been addicted to food stamps, and raised my children as a single mother,” Haaland said from the podium as she barely held back tears.
Haaland says his grandparents were separated from their families and sent to boarding schools “in an attempt to destroy their traditions and identity.”

The Norwegian tribe
Haaland has represented the state of New Mexico in the House of Representatives since 2018. Haaland is of Norwegian descent: the father was the grandson of Norwegian immigrants to the United States from Kvitsøy and Skudeneshavn in Rogaland.
Haaland becomes the first Native American to head a ministry in the United States.
During Saturday’s post, he reiterated his promises to increasingly implement climate measures in US domestic politics.
– Now that our country faces climate change and environmental injustice, the Ministry of the Interior has a role to address these challenges, he says.
