In an internal video for all the principals at the Oslo school, Principal Brynhild Farbrot admits that things are going in the wrong direction with the Oslo school. – Revealing, says the conservative top.
The Oslo school has had a great impact over the last year. After Principal Marte Gerhardsen took over the Education Agency, cuts to principals were promised. Instead, both the number of directors and the salary level have increased.
At the same time, there has been criticism from West Coast schools that they receive less money per student. Conservative politicians believe the school is going the wrong way. However, the red-green city council has rejected this.

In an Aftenposten article, Councilor for Education and Knowledge Inga Marthe Thorkildsen (SV) said that it is not right for things to go wrong at the Oslo school.
In Dagsavisen, two Labor politicians wrote that it was a “speculative smear campaign” by the Conservative Party about the worst school results.
In January, the town hall leader also beat the drum, writing: “The Conservatives’ argument that everything was fine while the Conservatives ruled, and everything is in free fall while the Labor Party, the Socialist People’s Party and the MDGs are in power. is stupid. “
– Going the wrong way
But in an internal seminar with the Education Agency and all the directors of the Oslo school, it appears that the agency itself admits problems in the Oslo school.
– The development for the boys is really bad this year, says division director Brynhild Farbrot in the video that Nettavisen has access to.
It also adds that it is concerned about development and asks the directors to propose measures. The director also admits that “the decline is greater than at the national level.”

The proportion of students below the so-called “critical limit”, where one struggles with a number of parameters, has also increased in some cohorts in recent years.
It is also clear to the manager that managers need to address declining results and make suggestions on how to improve them.
Also in the Student Survey, which asks students how they are doing in school and how they are doing academically, there are grim numbers.
The number of those who say they rarely or never manage to do the homework they receive has increased. The same applies to the group that “sometimes” does not do their homework. Decreases the number of those who always or frequently get tasks that they manage.
– I am concerned that they receive 3 percent rarely or never, and 15.4 percent say sometimes. Here we have a job to do, says Farbrot in the video.

Storting Member Mathilde Tybring-Gjedde (H) sits on the Education and Research Committee. She thinks the video is revealing.
– This is revealing. Raymond Johansen and Inga Marte Thorkildsen have spent several months bragging about the results of students going the wrong way and accusing everyone who is concerned about black paint. I’m glad that at least someone in the Oslo municipality dares to be refreshingly honest, Tybring-Gjedde tells Nettavisen.
– It is striking that Thorkildsen pushes the results of the older students in front of him. Of course, older students do well. They have good basic skills having been students at the Oslo School for many years. But Thorkildsen knows as well as I do that knowledge gaps and lack of mastery in the early school years tend to intensify as younger students get older, he says.
– What should be done?
– The City Council has lowered core Norwegian and mathematics subjects, and anticipates major cuts at the Oslo School in the coming years. School leaders in Oslo say that less attention is paid to student learning and that they receive poorer monitoring and support. The Ombudsman Against Bullying and the Ombudsman for Learning and Students have issued a notification that students’ rights are being violated and that there have been major differences between schools in Oslo. The corona pandemic adds to this. Trained teachers, principals and students do the best they can, but are more alone without support, says the conservative politician.

Councilor Inga Marte Thorkildsen (SV) believes it is “incredibly sad” that individual results are being used politically.
– I’m not worried about organizing a political competition to get details, I think the schools deserve better. Not only can we be concerned with what can be measured, but we must understand that some of what is measured does not tell the whole truth, Thorkildsen tells Nettavisen.
According to the city council, the results are generally good at school.
– I think it is incredibly sad and unfair to both school staff and students that individual results showing marginal changes from year to year are used to undermine the qualities of the Oslo School towards an election campaign. Students and teachers deserve praise for their fantastic efforts in times of crisis, and because politicians stand united by the uprising needed to counter the long-term effects of the pandemic, he says.

Tybring-Gjedde fights back and believes Thorkildsen is resorting to “political tricks”.
– It is a classic trick of politicians to pretend that criticism of responsible politicians is the same as criticism of students and teachers. Thorkildsen should be too good for that. Precisely because students and teachers do a fantastic job, they deserve an Education Agency and political leadership to follow up and support them. Instead, Thorkildsen chooses to overlook the fact that more Oslo students are falling behind and that the gaps are widening. I think that’s sad.

Brynhild Farbrot, who gives the presentation in the video, also says that it is important to put the quotes in the correct context.
– What I say in the video must be contextualized. In early February, the Education Agency received the award letter from the city hall department. The letter specifies goals and guidelines for UDE’s work in 2021. On that occasion, we organized two digital meetings for our school leaders. I gave a half-hour introduction at one of these meetings. There I chose to focus on the results that are related to the objectives in the award letter, Farbrot tells Nettavisen.
