– The bad news is that adding new sand doesn’t help.
In the summer of 2018 there was snorkeling at Kollevågen in Askøy. Then Bergen Councilwoman Anna Elisa Tryti and Askøy Mayor Terje Mathiassen lined up to point out that the area was redecorated.
Among other things, a new road was built, new grass was planted, covered in the sea and sand was put on the beach.
“The area appears to be a natural gem,” said the mayor of Askøy, according to an article written by the Bergen municipality.
Two years later, the natural pearl has been damaged:
Large parts of the sand in the western part of the beach have disappeared.
– not very cozy
Chances are it’s the sea that took the sand away, says Dag Seter, who is the leader in Bergen and the Omland Open Air Council. The outdoor council is responsible for the daily supervision of the area.
– Kolvågen is a beautiful area, and perhaps one of the best bathing spots in the county. But the beach is not very cozy now, says Seter.
He points out that nobody can be loaded because the sand is gone, since it has been washed away by the sea.
– But the bad news is that adding new sand doesn’t help. Something else must be done. You may have to fill with a heavier, thicker dough, or do something that affects the flow conditions in the water, he says.
Old man filling
For 45 years, the pothole was used as a boss fill for the Bergen municipality, before the site became a favorite outdoor area.
In total, 450,000 cubic meters of industrial and domestic waste have been deposited in the area, mainly at the bottom of the scale. In 1982, the area was covered, and since then more linings have been needed.
Although the beach is located in Askøy, the municipality of Bergen is the owner of the plot.
The municipality must be under inspection.
The City Environment Agency in the Municipality of Bergen informs BT that they have been informed that the sand is gone.
– The arena was laid in 2017. There has been no need for improvements in the past. Sandy beach sand was used precisely because it is heavier and should last a long time. We now see the sand being washed at the store site at the end of Verstervågen, writes environmental consultant Natalia Staren in an email.
BT has also asked how much it will cost to add new sand. The star replies that it is difficult to say at this time.
In the inspection, the municipality will analyze if there are other materials that are suitable to use, with respect to the wind, the climate and the sea, reports the environmental adviser.
Just a complaint
Seats at the Open Air Council point out that the rest of the area in Kollevågen is as pleasant as before, even though much of the sand is away from the beach.
“On land it is still so nice to stay, but spring is no longer very suitable for swimming,” he says.
At the same time, many of those who use the beach may not have noticed that the sand is gone.
– As far as I know, we have only received one request. But maybe it’s because it’s a little early. The public has not started bathing yet, and may not see it if it goes a little further, Seter says.
