Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir announced at a press conference on Tuesday, saying it was to the Faroe Islands and Greenland that the country is opening its borders, according to Reykjavík Grapewine.
“We are pleasantly surprised at how quickly the pandemic has decreased here in Iceland,” says the country’s chief epidemiologist, Thorolfur Gudnason, in a press release published on the government website.
It will also be open to visitors from other countries in the Schengen area no later than May 25, writes NRK. Which countries this applies to is currently unknown. Initially, visitors must perform infection and quarantine tests for two weeks.
– It is extremely important that we remain vigilant and do everything possible to minimize the risk of a new outbreak. If we see any recurring signs of the virus, we are prepared to take appropriate steps to locate and reverse the infection, Gudnason said in the press release.
Iceland is the country with the fewest deaths associated with the crown pandemic in the Nordic countries, with a total of ten. The country has also not registered new cases of infection in the last five days.
