In the early hours of Sunday, Remi Grinius was rescued after a freezing night on the mountainside in Jotunheimen. – I am grateful to be alive, the 39-year-old man tells VG.

At 22 on Saturday reported the police in the Interior who had started a large search operation for a man in his 30s did not return after a day trip to Galdhøpiggen.

A day later, Lithuanian Remi Grinius talks to VG on the phone. Unbelievably pretty in good condition.

– I’m grateful to be alive. Now I will go to bed as soon as possible, he tells VG at 10 pm on Sunday, half an hour after having reunited with the family.

Demanding conditions

What started out as a decent hike up the mountain on the roof of Norway on Saturday turned out to be anything but what Remi Grinius had envisioned on his first hike up the mountain.

He clarified with the tour group that he would catch up with the tour group ahead. But on the way down, it disappeared.

Grinius was reported missing after he failed to return to the tourist hut.

The weather in the area tonight was characterized by strong winds, rainfall and negative degrees. Grinius explains to VG that it feels too heavy to walk.

– I made many mistakes and went to many dangerous places. I shouldn’t have hiked the mountains alone in such harsh conditions. I didn’t think I had any chance of survival. I took every opportunity to stay alive, he says.

– I thought this was the end. I prayed, to the mountain, higher powers and for forgiveness. A little later I saw an abandoned tent that I entered.

Here he spent the night and managed to stay warm.

Remi Grinius recalls the demanding conditions on the mountain and then emphasizes that he was very poorly prepared.

– Every step was like going in “slow motion”. At the same time, I tried to climb higher in the mountains to get coverage on my phone.

The main rescue center received a GPS fix on the phone Sunday morning, from an area that rescuers had previously been unable to reach due to bad weather conditions, operations manager Bård Einar Hoft told VG. .

The air ambulance, the Red Cross crew and Norwegian rescue dogs conducted a search.

He thanks the rescue team for returning safely to his wife and two daughters.

– It is absolutely incredible that I return safely to my family, he says and qualifies the last 24 hours as “completely unthinkable”.
