GJERDRUM (VG) Jan-Tore Bariås (60) drove as usual on the way to work on Wednesday morning. Suddenly the path below him disappeared.

Published:

At around 5am on Wednesday, Jan-Tore Bariås (60) drives from Gjerdrum to work in Oslo.

But he only manages to drive a few hundred meters before running into something he describes as a snowdrift.

– Then all of a sudden cowardice leans in and the hood goes straight out into the open air, and the car shoots down maybe seven to ten meters down, Bariås tells VG.

– I tried to count the seconds until the strait, and I thought that this does not happen.

The hood hits the campground directly and the airbag is activated, before the car flips onto the roof.

King Harald on the avalanche: – I was deeply impressed.

– I gave myself a real slap in the face, because now I dream, I thought. Then I untied the harness, went outside and stood in a crater of coal-black clay, thinking what should I do now?

It was Dagbladet who first spoke to Bariås about the dramatic incident.

GET AN OVERVIEW: We know this about the landslide at Gjerdrum.

Horizontal for 45 minutes

Bariås says he saw the corner of a house free-falling on him and yelled to those there that they had to get out.

– It was completely surreal, you think you’re in a bad horror movie.

The walls around him shifted, and Bariås thought he had to escape and went deeper into the camp. On his way further afield, he came across an old man.

– He had joined a 40-50 meter landslide, and was barefoot with cuts on his forehead. I thought that he would not be alone, and he took my jacket.

Bariås estimates that it was sunk in the avalanche for about 45 minutes.

– You get a little scared, but at the same time your adrenaline rises. I thought I wasn’t going to die here. Just give it gas and see where it ends up.

Finally he heard the sound of helicopters above them, they were hit by a light and discovered them.

– Then luckily they see us. It was incredibly soft and heavy to walk around, so I don’t know if we were up.

– Strange end of a strange year

Bariås was taken by ambulance and escaped the incident without serious physical injury.

He was then transferred to the city hall for registration, and then by bus to the Olavsgaard Hotel, where he is now.

Bariås boasts of how the disaster has been handled.

– I hope that the number of disappeared will decrease drastically. Eleven is still a lot in a small town like Gjerdrum.

The number of people who have not been counted after the Gjerdrum landslide in Romerike in Viken County dropped from 11 to 10 at 10:30 pm Wednesday night.

It is not yet known whether the people who have now been counted have been removed from the landslide area or if they have been elsewhere.

At the same time, the police claim that about 1,000 people have been evacuated. The plan is to evacuate 1,500.

Bariås says they feel safe at the hotel, but most are hesitant considering there are still many missing.

“I don’t know where he got older, so I’ll meet him tomorrow to see how he did.”

– This was a strange ending to a strange year.
