In the past seven days, the number of corona infections has increased in Trondheim, and a total of 26 people, ten of them in the past 24 hours, have received positive test results.
According to the municipal chief doctor, Tove Røsstad, up to 20 of those infected may be related to a major outbreak, which the municipality believes may be due to a more contagious variant of the virus.
– We perceive that this is a more contagious variant of the virus than we are used to seeing, says Røsstad to Adressa, who mentioned the case for the first time.

The statement comes the day after FHI found a mutated version of the coronavirus that had not been seen before in Norway. The discovery was made in connection with the outbreak on the much-discussed “infection bus”, where several retirees who were on tour in Norway were infected and, in turn, passengers spread the infection in the places they visited.
Røsstad tells Dagbladet that the outbreak they now have in Trondheim has no suspicious connection to the “infection bus”, but confirms that the municipality is in contact with FHI, because they experience that this virus is a more infectious variant.
FHI’s Line Vold department director tells Dagbladet that her lab tests virus samples from across Norway to monitor viruses that are circulating across the country.
– For example, to be able to see if there has been a mutation in the virus that could make it more contagious. This work is underway now, but the Trondheim tests are not finished at this time, he says.
Alarms about the progressive health crisis
The medical director believes that the outbreak in Trondheim is to be expected to increase, as new cases of infection can be expected up to ten days after people have been exposed to the infection.
– Are you now afraid of a major outbreak in Trondheim?
– A virus that spreads more easily has the potential to spread more, but we have been very close and asked many to be tested and quarantined. In that sense, I’m not afraid of a big outbreak in Trondheim, but we take one day at a time, so we’ll see, he tells Dagbladet.

To Dagbladet, Røsstad explains that the municipality began to suspect that a more contagious virus was circulating in them, after an infected person infected four other people in the student environment of the city in a short time. They had all visited the Lille London nightclub.
– In a very short time, we have four new infected. It is not a large number, but it is larger than what we are used to. People also tested positive a little faster than we’re used to, he says.
A total of seven people who visited the nightclub on October 7 may now be linked to the outbreak, and up to 100 guests and employees have been quarantined.
Not all are close contacts
The medical director is aware that Little London’s involvement is accidental and that there is no suspicion of a violation of infection control rules.
Several of those infected also had no close contacts. They did not sit at the same table and did not know each other, he explains.

This also makes the municipal chief suspect that the virus is more contagious.
– In relation to the outbreak here, we saw quite quickly that it does not have to be as close to contact as what we have seen before, says Røsstad.
He adds that the outbreak also includes people who are in a family or live together and therefore have had close contact.
