In recent days, an outbreak of infection at the Gamla nightclub in central Oslo has received a lot of attention in various media.
A total of 35 guests have been confirmed infected after being present at the disco on Monday, November 9, the day before the drink stop in the capital.
Also, another person is infected by a guest at the disco.
Press contact in St. Hanshaugen district Christine Thune tells TV 2 that they do not expect the number of primary infections to increase further, as the normal outbreak period is ten days from now.
– Therefore, we hope you have reached the top. What we do not know is whether there will be an increase in secondary infection, says the press contact.
A total of 164 guests and employees were quarantined as a result of the outbreak. Several of those who were quarantined from the beginning have already finished this.
Checking out the disco
On Thursday afternoon, the Oslo municipality confirmed that they were reporting on Gamla after the outbreak.
– This is a very serious and unacceptable incident, and the most important thing we do now is fight the infection. We have introduced a lot of strict measures to do just that, and then we must comply with the infection control rules that exist, says Oslo business councilor Victoria Marie Evensen (Labor) on TV 2.
The municipality has assessed that the outbreak of infection in Gamla is of such a nature that it is correct to go for a review.
This is the first time that such a review has been submitted.
– We do not perceive this to be representative of the restaurant industry in Oslo. Overall, the industry has been very good, but here you see that the night before the bar stop, you have what doesn’t seem like an infection-friendly party, Evensen says.
TV 2 has spoken with several guests who were present at the disco this particular night.
– What happened happens during the last minutes before closing time at midnight. It was so fast, says a male guest.
– Out of control
In a video posted by VGTV, several people can be seen dancing on the dance floor of the disco. On the night in question, this was contrary to the guidelines of the Oslo municipality.
The male guest TV 2 has spoken to was with seven other people, and four of them were diagnosed with an infection after the night. However, two of them left the disco as early as 10 p.m., less than two hours before the dance situation arose.
– Someone got up at his table and danced. Then someone started moving onto the dance floor. In the end, there were maybe 10-20 people standing on the dance floor and it got a little out of hand, he tells TV 2, adding:
– If this had happened at 11 pm and lasted a long time, we probably would have said no or we would have left. But we barely managed to turn around before it was over.
– a bit embarrassing
The male guest says that there was only one guard present tonight, and that this guard was not in the room when the dance took place.
– I understand that it looks bad for that video. If it had been going on for three or four hours, I would have understood, but it was during the last minutes of the night.
– How does the infection live, when this case has received so much attention?
– You think it sucks, and it’s a bit embarrassing to be one of them, he says.
– Safe place
The male guest and the rest of his companions have been to the disco several times during the pandemic. He feels that they have followed the infection control rules well and have been very strict.
– It is a safe place and I would not go there if I felt unsafe.
TV 2 has contacted the CEO of Gamla Rune Johansen.
– I do not want to comment more on this now, he says.
Deputy Health Director Espen Rostrup Nakstad told TV 2 that this incident shows how easily the coronavirus spreads when many people gather indoors and how important it is for young people to follow infection control rules.
– It is especially important now to quarantine yourself for 10 days if you have had close contact with another sick person. It’s equally important to make sure you’re with as few people as possible indoors when you’re with friends, he says.
