Hurtigruten cancels all planned Antarctic cruises for the 2020/21 season, that is, for the remainder of 2020 and at least the first quarter of 2021.
Hurtigruten explains this with the crown crisis, with travel restrictions and quarantine regulations.
In a stock exchange announcement, Hurtigruten notes that many of the guests on the company’s so-called expedition cruise have chosen to postpone the trip, not demand a refund. The shipping company claims reimbursement claims are below industry standards, but Hurtigruten currently has claims for reimbursements of 1.5 million euros that have not been processed.
Hurtigruten reports good demand for expedition cruises for the second half of 2021 and 2022. The cruise season in Antarctica is in summer, when it is winter in Norway and the Northern Hemisphere.
“International travel restrictions and closed ports are changing rapidly, often overnight. Today cruise ships are prohibited in many waters, and most flights to our ports of departure in Argentina and Chile have been canceled, ”writes CEO Daniel Skjeldam in a letter to clients, reproduced on Finansavisen.
“This has been a difficult decision to make because it has far-reaching consequences for our guests, crews and staff, our partners, and the communities we have worked with for decades. But it remains the only right decision to make. Health and safety of our guests and crew is Hurtigruten’s highest priority, “writes Skjeldam.(Terms)Copyright Dagens Næringsliv AS and / or our suppliers.
