On Monday, there was a landslide in the Italian resort town of Camogli in Liguria.

A cemetery that lay on the edge of a cliff slid into the Mediterranean, writes CNN.

Hundreds of coffins and corpses fell into the sea. Avisa Il Giornale reports on morbid scenes, where coffins float in the water.

The cemetery was built over a hundred years ago.

Only ten of the around 200 coffins have been recovered from the sea, Mayor Francesco Olivari tells CNN.

– An unimaginable disaster, says Olivari.

He says that the recovery work for the rest of the coffins “will depend on the sea in the coming days.” Divers contribute to the rescue operation.

It says municipal workers discovered cracks in the ground on Saturday, right next to where the landslide took place, and raised the alarm.

– We work part of the coast. It was right next to the area that fell, says the mayor.

He says this part of the coast is very prone to landslides.

– This type of landslide that occurred is very difficult to detect or predict, says the mayor.

Camogli is a favorite holiday destination on the Ligurian coast, close to the jet-set town of Portofino.
