Trav- og Galoppnytt’s editor takes a hard line against Norsk Tipping’s query response on a new law for gambling. Norsk Tipping is not recognized in the reviews.

Truls G. Pedersen refers to Norsk Tipping as “the hypocrites of Hamar” in a comment he has written on tgn.no.

Further down the case, you can read Norsk Tipping’s response to the criticisms.

The controversial issue is the limits of loss. Since 2016, Norsk Tipping has been capped at NOK 20,000 per month. More than 1,100 of Norsk Rikstoto’s players have had a loss limit of NOK 1.5 million per month.

Now Norsk Rikstoto is also being pushed to have the same stop loss as Norsk Tipping, albeit probably with some minor adjustments. But the horse game in Norway is such that the most important players represent a very important part of the turnover. And Rikstoto assumes they will largely disappear when the 20,000 cap is introduced starting in New Year 2021.

It is this dispute over the loss limits that Truls G. Pedersen plays with when he writes that “… in Norsk Tipping in Hamar you have limits of play, but otherwise there are no limits to rudeness and hypocrisy.”

– I think it is hypocritical, because Norsk Tipping almost exchanged the right to have “red” bets against the introduction of loss limits. Now they want to force Rikstoto to put on the same straitjacket, Truls G. Pedersen tells VG.

A little explanation: a relatively recent study from the University of Bergen shows that Norsk Tipping has four of the seven “most dangerous” games in Norway, that is, those that pose the highest risk for problem players. Horse games come lower on the risk list.

And Truls G. Pedersen believes that it is the horse game that Norsk Tipping has pointed to when in their query response to the Ministry of Culture they write:

“It seems natural to Norsk Tipping that the interests of the vulnerable are decisive when the level of protection is reflected in future regulation of gambling. In this context, the own interests of gambling companies should not have a special weight at the expense of consumer protection.

“Norsk Tipping also believes that it is entirely possible for all legal players to create an attractive portfolio of games within these expectations. All players in an exclusive market must take responsibility for ensuring that market developments are moderate and consistent with the desire to bet and the market situation at all times.

Therefore, Norsk Rikstoto is not mentioned, but Pedersen has no doubt:

– There are only two exclusive rights holders in this country, Norsk Tipping and Norsk Rikstoto …

The equestrian editor thinks it strange that Norsk Tipping, as he understands it, targets Norsk Rikstoto, as long as they themselves have “casino games with quick draws and a high tendency to trigger unwanted behavior from players”, as express in your comment.

– Is there a conspiracy between Norsk Tipping and the Ministry of Culture ?, asks Truls G. Pedersen rhetorically.

– I interpret Norsk Tipping’s inquiry statement as an attempt to lick the Ministry of Culture and the Norwegian Lottery Authority on the back, at the same time that the horse game is presented as the ugly duckling, he tells VG.

Norsk Tipping communications director Tonje Sagstuen reacts as follows when confronted with Pedersen’s criticism:

– How the editor of Trav og Galopp-Nytt chooses to interpret our response to the query on a new gambling law will be at his own expense. We do not recognize ourselves in his description of the actual conditions, he says.

– Norsk Tipping has not meant anything about what accountability tool Norsk Rikstoto should have. In our response to the query, we have expressed our support for what we experience is the primary consideration in Norwegian gaming policy, precisely that it is the consideration for vulnerable players that should drive the way exclusive players shape their offering. game and its responsibility framework.

Norwegian Rikstoto boss Camilla Garmann is considerably more cautious than Trotting and Galloping’s editor when asked by VG about her comment on Norsk Tipping’s inquiry statement. Is there an attack on Norsk Rikstoto?

– I choose not to interpret it that way. Naturally, they are concerned with defending their line of liability for their products. I don’t know how much experience they have with horse games and our clients. Perhaps we are the ones who have the best competition to comment on, says Garmann, continuing:

– To the Gambling Problem Helpline there were less than three percent of all calls related to Norwegian Rikstoto in 2019. In the University of Bergen survey, our games are far away on the list of games that have higher risk. And this is partly due to the fact that our races last many hours, with a 20 minute break until the next race, and cannot be compared to “intermittent” games where people get the answer right away.
