Høie warns Oslo: national authorities may override city council

So far, Oslo has chosen to wait with stricter measures and will analyze the impact of measures that have already been implemented. City Councilor Raymond Johansen (Labor Party) announced a press conference later on Monday.

In municipalities that have had local outbreaks, early and extensive measures have led to quick and good results, according to Høie.

– My concern is that Oslo over time has had quite high infection rates and many local outbreaks ongoing at the same time, says Høie.

Different country Norway

During the press conference, Høie also said that he hopes Oslo will follow the advice on stricter measures and calls on the municipality to take responsibility.

The experiences of other large cities in Europe show that similar situations mean that you have lost control, according to Høie.

– Norway is now actually a slightly different country in Europe. We have a relatively open society and can even foresee more openness, says Høie.

This assumes that you can still beat the local outbreaks, which you have managed so far.

– I think it is possible in Norway, but it requires that all municipalities that have outbreaks take their share of the work, says Høie.

Urgent meeting Monday night

The Health Minister will have a digital meeting with Oslo and 19 surrounding municipalities on Monday evening. The aim is to achieve a level of action that is generally adapted to the infection situation in and around Oslo, says Høie.

The affected municipalities are Bærum, Asker, Lillestrøm, Nordre Follo, Lørenskog, Nittedal, Nesodden, Rælingen, Ås, Lier, Frogn, Nes, Vestby, Enebakk, Aurskog-Høland, Lunner, Gjerdrum, Hole and Gran.

Høie has asked the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) and the Norwegian Health Directorate to consider new measures for the surrounding municipalities.
