The new variant can be up to 70 percent more contagious than the common coronavirus. Therefore, the UK has introduced extra stringent restrictions in areas where the virus has been detected, although the virus does not appear to cause more serious illness.

– It is important that we act quickly to try to prevent this variant of the virus from reaching Norway and spreading further nationally here in Norway, says the Minister of Health and Care Services, Bent Høie in a press release.

– It is important that all people who have arrived from the UK in the last 14 days, comply with the quarantine rules. We have strict entry measures, but are now considering whether further measures need to be implemented, he adds.

The Norwegian Health Directorate has been tasked with reinforcing information on quarantine rules for those coming or coming from the UK in the last 14 days.

– The Norwegian Directorate of Health will also consider whether people who have arrived from the UK in the last 14 days and those arriving in the future will be offered a PCR test after arrival, the press release states.

In addition, they will consider tightening the quarantine exemption rules for travelers from the UK.
