Hidden for 16 years – shakes Sweden

The trial began on Wednesday, where Daniel Nyqvist (37) is charged with the double murder of an eight-year-old boy and a 56-year-old woman in Linköping in October 2004.

The beginning of the trial has been very special, Crime expert and Expressen commentator Fredrik Sjöshult tells Dagbladet.

– For the first time in 16 years, relatives were able to see the murderer, who was previously completely unknown to them. There were many tears when they recounted their suffering, says Sjöshult, who is following the trial in Sweden.

DNA field

Nyqvist was arrested in June this year, 16 years after the murders occurred, and already in the first interrogation he admitted that he was behind the stabbings of Anna-Lena (56) and Mohamad (8).

In the time after the killings, Nyqvist managed to hide from the police, among other things, without using social media and with minimal social contact.

And despite a massive investigation with thousands of leads, it was only this year that police revealed the 37-year-old. It happened after a successful collaboration with genealogist Peter Sjölund.

obsessive thoughts

When it became clear that Nyqvist’s DNA matched that of the crime scene, he immediately admitted his guilt, according to Expressen.

But when the indictment was ready and the preliminary investigation of the case was made public in Sweden, it emerged that Nyqvist has said that he felt compelled to kill to ease an anxiety.

He is also said to have said that he chose the victims at random.

– Lost foot

In court, Nyqvist did not look like class photos of himself when he was young, writes Sjöshult in a comment on Expressen.

– Then he looks alert and seeks contact with the camera. Now she seems to have lost her balance, writes the crime expert.

– Look down and show no emotion, Sjöshult explains to Dagbladet.

He says that the 37-year-old does not want to be convicted of premeditated murder, but a lighter criminal classification in Sweden, where the fact is explained by coincidences.

In Nyqvist’s case, it’s all about obsessions.

Programmed

During Wednesday’s testimony, Nyqvist fell into several traps, believes Sjöshult, who says he is convinced the 37-year-old was sent to escape a conviction for premeditated murder.

In his comment, the crime expert supports the claim with Nyqvist’s own explanation:

• Nyqvist had planned to kill for a week and brought a knife to Linköping on the fateful morning in October 2004.

• He chose Mohamad because he was a boy. The adults at the site appeared “too big,” according to Nyqvist. They could strike back, he says, and then he had “missed.”

• During the escape, he took off his hat to “change his appearance.” She also washed the blood so she could take the bus home.

– His words testify to a mental presence, which will make it difficult for the lawyer to affirm that it was not a premeditated murder, the criminalist believes.

– An open wound

That the case finally gets clarification means a lot in Sweden, according to Sjöshult.

– This has been an open wound and trauma for 16 years, he says.

– It was extremely ruthless violence directed against a child and a woman, continues Sjöshult, who says the case is among the largest crime cases in Sweden.
