One in ten residents is now under quarantine in the Hyllestad municipality after ten people have been diagnosed with coronavirus this week.
On Tuesday, a case of infection was detected in the municipality of Hyllestad in western Norway. On Thursday, the number has risen to ten infected and the municipality is still waiting for more test results.
– Only today we have tested 160 people, says Mayor Kjell Eide to VG.
The municipality has just over 1,300 inhabitants. As a result of this week’s outbreak, more than 150 people, out of every ten residents, have been quarantined. NRK covered the case first.
The municipality has closed
Already on Tuesday afternoon, the municipality decided to close schools, kindergartens, the sports center and the town hall. According to the speaker, it is an infection associated with both school and kindergarten.
– We deliberately chose to attack with force immediately. Then we will see if it helps and if we take control, says the mayor.
They are also very careful with people entering the nursing home, which has so far been spared the infection.
– That is the worst case: someone brings the infection there, says Eide.
The municipality’s largest workplace, the Havyard shipyard, has also been infected and closed.
Has received help from neighboring municipalities
Work is demanding to track and test infections in the municipality, says the mayor.
– We are a small organization, so it is only a matter of managing it from a health point of view. But we have received help from neighboring municipalities for infection detection and we may need help with several things. If it’s durable, you fight a bit, he says.
There has been an infection in Hyllestad before, associated with foreign workers working at the Havyard shipyard. These cases of infection have been discovered shortly after arrival and have been under control, says Eide.
The municipality does not yet know where the infection is coming from at this time.

Havyard Communications Manager Gunnar Larsen confirms that the yard is temporarily closed. Seven out of 460 employees are infected with corona.
– We track infections and learn more over the weekend, Larsen tells VG.
On Thursday, only the hotel and grocery stores are open in the township.
– The stores are good. They allow people to order food, which they can pick up at the door or take it home if they don’t want to go out, says the mayor.
