Tynset’s ward chief did not die from a blood clot like a nurse in Lillehammer did after receiving the vaccine.
But the Norwegian Medicines Agency does not rule out that the brain hemorrhage that the woman also had may also be related to the vaccine.
Now it is relevant that the municipality contributes with the help to obtain compensation for the family patient, if it turns out that she died from the vaccine.
Municipal physician Tor-Halvor Bjørnstad Tuveng says the death hit everyone hard.
90 municipal health workers were vaccinated with AstraZeneca on the same day as the woman. Several have visited the emergency room because they are anxious.
Had mild symptoms
The 34-year-old woman worked as a department director in the nursing and care sector in Tynset Township. In late February, she and several other healthcare professionals were vaccinated with AstraZeneca.
She initially had only mild symptoms after the vaccine, which is normal. After a week, she got a little headache, but not enough to worry about.
Ten days after vaccination, he consulted a doctor because his condition had worsened. She was later admitted to Tynset Hospital, which transferred her to Trondheim University Hospital. There he died on March 7, the day after going to the emergency room.
The municipality reported the incident to the Norwegian Medicines Agency because the woman became seriously ill and died 10 days after vaccination.
Steinar Madsen, director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency, says there are certain common features and some differences between these cases.
– Since these are very serious cases, it is natural that all are thoroughly investigated. We don’t discuss the details of each individual disease picture, he says.
– It is very similar to the other cases. And as the Norwegian Medicines Agency has pointed out, this woman also had low platelet levels, which is also a characteristic of the others, says municipal doctor Tor-Halvor Bjørnstad Tuveng.
It says the 35-year-old woman who died with Tynset did not have any chronic disease before being vaccinated, but was healthy.
Many visited the doctor’s office.
Several countries have reported an unusual disease picture with the combination of blood clots, low platelet counts, and bleeding that has occurred in people 3 to 14 days after the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The Norwegian Medicines Agency has received 7,702 reports of suspected side effects. Most apply to common and expected side effects. Of these, 361 are classified as serious. Five of them have been treated at the hospital.
Together with the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the Norwegian Medicines Agency continues to investigate whether it is related to vaccination.
The deaths in Tynset have hit the people of Nord-Østerdal hard. The crisis team has worked with both the woman’s family and her colleagues.
Many of them have vaccinated themselves in recent weeks.
– We have had many consultations in the emergency room and the doctor’s office, says Bjørnstad Tuveng.
He says some can be cleared up over the phone because they sound like mild symptoms that aren’t alarming. While there are some as well, they have been taken to the ER and doctor’s office for a closer look.
– For some, it has been natural to measure platelets. So you’ve felt that having normal values can have a lightening effect, so you can rule out serious side effects, says Tuveng.
No one else at Tynset has had abnormal values.
Help the family
The woman who died in Tynset was buried on Friday. The municipality works closely to follow up on his family.
The municipal doctor says that it may be relevant to help with a social worker who can help them in case it is relevant to request compensation for the patient’s injuries.
– We have to see how this develops, says Tor-Halvor Bjørnstad Tuveng.
He says that although they have now lost one of their employees, they are trying to garner the positive effects of getting vaccinated against COVID-19.
– This seems to be a very rare side effect, he says.
