– This is a previously healthy person who has now been diagnosed with a blood clot in both lungs, says Bergen Health Director Marta Ebbing.
The patient received the AstraZeneca vaccine against covid-19 a couple of weeks ago and was admitted today.
– The person in question is a healthcare worker, but not an employee of Helse Bergen.
The director cannot say anything more about the patient’s condition.
– We cannot know if a blood clot in this case is due to the vaccine, but we had to record it as a possible unexpected side effect of the vaccine.
One in five has been vaccinated
There are around 13,000 employees at Helse Bergen. The health fund has full responsibility for vaccinating some 15,000 health workers in its area. To date, 3,246 have received the first dose. The last one was on Friday, March 5.
– We have had a very good collaboration with the union delegates and the security service to prepare and carry out the vaccination.
On Thursday, the Norwegian government stopped vaccinating healthcare workers in the middle, because it is being investigated internationally whether the cases of blood clots and missing platelets are due to the AstraZeneka vaccine.
– I can understand if people are anxious and I can understand that it is restlessness. We have encouraged all those vaccinated to follow up if they have symptoms and to report and see a doctor if they feel seriously ill, Ebbing says.
– We have had many who have gotten sick after the vaccine. Side effects are common, such as fever, frostbite, headache, and malaise. We have noticed that more people have stronger and longer lasting side effects. Some have been ill for days, up to weeks, and required sick leave after vaccination.
Ebbing says there are still only a handful of employees who have rejected the vaccine.
Five suspicions refute
This weekend, four other healthcare workers were admitted to Haukeland University Hospital on suspicion of blood clots or platelet deficiency, but none of them were able to prove it.
Last week, a Helse Bergen employee was admitted due to vaccine side effects, and this case has been reported as a possible serious side effect of the vaccine.
All five have been discharged from the hospital and none of them were diagnosed with a blood clot or lack of platelets.
There are no more reports of blood clots.
Two recently vaccinated Norwegian health workers have died since Friday. On Friday, an Inland healthcare worker in his 30s died, less than 10 days after receiving the AstraZenica vaccine.
In Helse Sørøst, three healthcare workers were reported this weekend who were admitted with a blood clot shortly after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.
One of them, a woman under the age of 50, died on Sunday. The Norwegian Medicines Agency is investigating whether death and blood clot disease are related to the vaccine.
Today’s former professors, the Norwegian Medicines Agency’s medical director, Steinar Madsen, said they had received no further reports related to rare side effects, such as blood clots.
The Norwegian Medicines Agency is reviewing blood clot reports for all vaccines.
– We assume that if it has been 14 days after you have been vaccinated, there is very little risk of side effects. Those who have gotten sick have gotten a dose, Madsen says.
So far, 121,000 Norwegians have received the AstraZeneca vaccine. Only about 30 cases of serious side effects have been reported.
– Fortunately, this is a rare case. Now it is a question of comparing the incidence of a disease among those vaccinated with what is the natural incidence of the disease. It is now being studied both in Norway and in other countries, says Ebbing.
According to AstraZeneca, a total of 15 cases of blood clots in the legs and 22 cases of blood clots in the lungs have been recorded in Europe.
The drug maker believes this number is lower than what is expected on average in that population.
