A rapid test provides a response to corona infection in 20 minutes. It depends on the municipalities that take this test.
Aftenposten wrote already in October about the new rapid tests which gave a quick response. However, it took two months and a lot of infection in the community before the tests were used.
– Rapid tests have been validated since the first batch arrived in Norway. The results of the validation were presented today and show that the tests are suitable for use in various contexts.
Here’s how Deputy Health Director Espen Rostup Nakstad explains why it has taken time.
Starting Monday, December 7, a quick test will be possible if you wonder if you are sick. The test gives you an answer in 20 minutes. You have to wait at the test station until you get an answer.
Subjects have performed two tests
According to deputy health director Espen Nakstad, the test will detect slightly more than eight out of ten with symptoms. The test has been tested on nearly 4,000 people. They are tested with the traditional test and the new one. In this way, the tests were compared to each other.
Furthermore, it says that of those who have symptoms for less than six days, rapid tests detect about 88 percent of all those who are considered contagious.
– The 12 percent that is not captured will be compensated by a much larger number of people who can be evaluated. So you fish a lot more in total, says Nakstad.
The advantage of this test should be that, in the event of a major outbreak, you can quickly find out if one or more are infected. They can then be isolated or quarantined immediately.

The test should be used in particular:
- To evaluate people with symptoms of COVID-19 when it takes a long time to get answers to laboratory tests (more than 24 hours)
- When there is an outbreak or suspected outbreak of covid-19 in a municipality to identify people who may infect others, map the outbreak and quickly get started with infection detection, quarantine and isolation.
- In heavily infected areas, it may be relevant to test health facility employees and residents regularly. It may also be relevant to test visitors with quick tests.
Does not escape quarantine with negative test
Many people are reluctant to get tested because they find having a stick to their nose disgusting. The rapid test is done in the same way, so that it does not leak through the nose.
According to the Norwegian Health Directorate, responses to rapid tests cannot lead to your being released from quarantine.
The rapid test shows if you can infect others at that time, but even if the rapid test does not show results, you may still be infected and the disease may be developing, so you can infect others the next day.
The same applies to laboratory tests, but laboratory tests are more accurate and will reveal more cases of disease, including those that are in development.

You may be asked to run more tests
If a person has many corona symptoms, but does not test positive, a traditional test is recommended.
Nakstad says that people should behave the same way they do today if they wonder if they are infected.
– You ask for a test in the usual way. The municipalities themselves decide to what extent the tests will be used. For the person who needs a test, there will be no major changes other than that you will get an answer very quickly, after about 20 minutes, he says.
