Hans Olav Overn (45) is sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his son Oscar André Ocampo Overn (15). “Unusually cynical and calculated,” writes the Gjøvik District Court.
The father of the family is also found guilty of having sexual relations with his own son and of a serious deprivation of liberty on the part of the boy’s mother who was locked up when she tried to avoid the murder.
“The murder was carefully planned. The prosecutor called the murder a pure execution, a feature with which the court agrees,” the Gjøvik district court writes in the verdict.
Tip
The court believes there is no doubt that Overn was considering the killing action and “completed it almost entirely according to his detailed planning.”
The murder is described as “unusually cynical and calculated”.
Get a confessional discount
State prosecutor Thorbjørn Klundseter made a statement that Overn should be sentenced to 21 years in prison. He believed that in this case, sanctions should not be imposed, as is often the case with confessions.
The District Court awarded Overn a confession grant and is therefore sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The father has been acquitted of one of the elements of the accusation, two cases of sexual relations that the court considers are not sufficient evidence to demonstrate that it happened. The fact that he is acquitted of this does not affect the sentence, since the court believes that the punishment for the murder would only be close to the maximum, that is, 21 years in prison.
– He is acquitted of the conditions of which he believed to be innocent and has been penalized by a certain penalty discount. Therefore, he has decided to accept the verdict, Father Håvard Fremstad’s advocate tells VG.
Do not regret
The 45-year-old man said during the trial that he planned to kill the son and himself after the 15-year-old’s mother learned that he had repeatedly sexually assaulted her son.
The father of the family called the police and said that “there was a dead boy in his house.”
When asked by the prosecutor, Overn replied that he did not regret the murder, only the abuses that, according to his explanation, were the cause of the murder.
Assistant lawyer Inger Marie Støen has served the sentence with her client, the mother of the murdered Oscar.
– Of course, this is an additional charge. She is relieved that there is now a verdict and sincerely hopes that the case will not be appealed so that she and the family can focus on working on what happened, Støen says.
She says that her mother reacts strongly to her ex-husband not regretting what he has done.
– The worst thing for her is that she shows no signs of remorse. She thinks it is painful and painful that he still feels that she would be better off if her son died, says the aid attorney.
Defender Håvard Fremstad says his client has tried to pay attention to the family when he decided to accept the verdict.
– You don’t want to expose your loved ones to more stress than has already been. So he says this right now, says Fremstad.
Oscar André Ocampo, 15, died overnight in the hospital on November 4 of last year. He had then been in a coma with serious injuries since his father strangled him on October 9.
Oscar André was adopted from Colombia when he was a baby.
The trial lasted three days last week in the Gjøvik District Court.
