Handball, EC Handball | Romania shocked Norway

Norway got a real wake-up call in Thursday’s meeting with Romania, which made the match much more exciting than what the experts and bookmakers had predicted beforehand.

ROMANIA – NORWAY 20-28:

KOLDING (Nettavisen): Norway was a big favorite before Monday’s meeting with Romania, but had problems with Bogdan Burcea’s crew.

Because it certainly didn’t go well, like against Poland and Germany at the beginning of the championship, and 18 minutes before the end, Romania led the match 17-16.

Fortunately for Thorir Hergeirsson and company. Goalkeeper Katrine Lunde did her best in the second half and eventually the Romanian defensive wall broke down in a big way.

– they have deceived us

Former Norway men’s national team coach Gunnar Pettersen admits that he was very surprised by what happened at the Sydbank Arena in Kolding during the match.

– We have been fooled ourselves. We thought this was going to be a pure overtaking. We also noticed it in Thorir Hergeirsson, who in the first time-out said that you have to bear in mind that they are spinning a bit. It’s in the fact that they also expected this to be pretty seamless, Pettersen commented on TV 3.

However, he praises how Norway is still fighting back and clearly winning the match in a half-day.

– I think that says a lot about this team. Win by eight goals in one day, where you have so many shots. It’s an achievement in itself, Pettersen said after the game.

Hergeirsson is not surprised

For Nettavisen, however, Hergeirsson says he was not surprised by Romania.

– They are decent players and have a very good defense. There are good international players. They dictate the pace of the match a bit. They have a fighting spirit in their defense and they have good goalkeepers, which we did a bit more good today, Hergeirsson tells Nettavisen.

– We knew they were going to do everything they could to try to stress us out and get us out of this, and maybe steal a point or two from us. They have been developing and I think it is clear that they have grown in these three games. New players are getting more and more involved, Hergeirsson continues.

Norway had 23 shots during the match, several of them close to one hundred percent chance. Hergeirsson is disappointed with the count, but also finds something positive with all the boom hits.

– We won by eight goals and we have a lot of good chances to really win by 15, but it’s a good “reminder” that we need to be sharp and clear from the start. The great thing about this is that each player can find a shot, adjust it for the next time and put it on goal.

Delete at the beginning

The Norwegian girls did not reach the level they showed in this weekend’s match against Germany in the first round, and the Romanians did well.

Camilla Herrem delivered her first two booms in the championship after 13 of 13 thus far, and there was a lot of neglect and weak finishes on the part of Thorir Hergeirsson’s students.

Romanian goalkeeper Julija Dumanska will get her share of the credit as well, despite most of Norway’s shots not even going to goal.

In fact, Norway scored just one goal in the first eleven minutes of the first half, and one goal came on a penalty shot, signed Nora Mørk, still safe from seven meters.

Lunde played very well after the break

Veteran goalkeeper Katrine Lunde returned to the Norwegian goal, but did not reach her best before the break either. In the second half, however, he played the best he could and occasionally closed the Norwegian goal.

Norway should be happy about that, because the offense wasn’t in the first half of the second half either.

However, in the end, the quality difference became apparent and Norway pulled out of the last quarter. Finally, the score at the Sydbank Arena showed 20-28.
