That’s the number of warheads in the US nuclear weapons arsenal, according to US authorities. 1,365 of them are deployed in rockets or bombers. Each of these warheads can kill millions of people if detonated in a populated area.
Hackers have now broken into the US state agency responsible for these nuclear weapons, according to the country’s security authorities.
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has detected “suspicious activity” in various parts of its network, including two laboratories in New Mexico and in Washington, writes the Politico website.

It’s unclear what information the hackers found or what they did to the damage. But they should not have managed to get into the most central defense systems, an Energy Ministry spokesman tells Politico.
The attack on the nuclear weapons agency is only one part of a very extensive hacker attack against the United States. The attack continues, the country’s security authorities wrote in a press release on Wednesday.
This is probably the biggest hacker attack in several years. The country’s data security authorities warned late Thursday of a “grave danger” to America’s digital infrastructure.
Hackers affiliated with Russian intelligence authorities were likely behind the attack, US security authorities told the AP news agency.

Trump criticizes former cyber boss

Upcoming President Joe Biden, who won this year’s presidential election and will take office in the White House on January 20, says in an announcement that he will take action as soon as he’s in the new job.
– This will be a very high priority. We must prevent such attacks from occurring. To do that, we must, among other things, ensure that those responsible are severely punished, Biden said in a statement Thursday.
Trump has been very active on social media in recent days. He has devoted himself mainly to complaining about the outcome of the elections. He has also found a place on the show to criticize Chris Krebs. Krebs was fired from his job as America’s head of data security a month ago, after he said the presidential election had been completed without a hitch.
Harsh criticism of Trump from a party colleague
Many have criticized Trump in recent days for not paying more attention to the ongoing hacker attack. Among them is his party colleague Mitt Romney, the former presidential candidate who currently sits in the Senate.
“It is as if Russian bombers are flying over our country repeatedly undetected,” he wrote on Twitter.
He believes the disclosure shows a “disturbing American vulnerability” and a notable weakness in defending against cyber attacks.
The hacker attack is also probably much more extensive than previously thought. At least 40 of Microsoft’s customers have downloaded and installed software that has been used by hackers to break into other systems, the company wrote in a blog post Thursday.
“The number of victims is sure to grow,” Microsoft CEO Brad Smith wrote in the publication.
Microsoft itself is also said to have been affected by the attack by hackers, writes the Reuters news agency.
Putin points the finger at America

Putin accuses the United States of being behind a series of attacks against Russia over the past year. He also believes that the allegations of Russian hacker attacks on the United States are an attempt to worsen relations between the two countries and blacken President Trump.
– The relationship between Russia and the United States is being held hostage to US domestic politics. It is worse for the Americans themselves, Putin said at the press conference.
