Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean believes a seat bar saved his life in Sunday’s violent accident. A security measure that has only lasted a few years.

French has spoken since the hospital. In a video on his Instagram account, he appreciates the new protection called halo. It is a ring that protects the driver’s head in the cabin.

– I was not because of the halo a few years ago, but I think it is fantastic that it has been included in Formula 1, and without it I would not have been able to speak with you today, says the 34-year-old in the video.

The images from the Bahrain Grand Prix were dramatic after the accident, where large flames erupted from the Frenchman’s car. Grosjean could, however, drive away on his own before being transported in an ambulance.

Video footage shows the car was on fire when Grosjean was rescued from it. Grosjean was in the flames for more than 20 seconds before leaving.

The halo was introduced to Formula 1 cars in 2018 to protect drivers from being hit by objects such as tire parts or other loose objects.

Grosjean’s team, Haas, said Sunday that the Frenchman has suffered minor burns to his hands and feet and possibly a broken rib.
