A lot of effort is being put into the landslide area in Gjerdrum on Thursday night.
In the morning there has been some confusion as to whether a dog has been sent to the landslide area or not.
– Now a dog is inserted into the landslide zone. Without a dog handler, but by line from a helicopter, operations manager Karianne Knudsen told Dagbladet shortly after 5 o’clock.
Knudsen said they have a continuous assessment at all times on the potential for danger and possibly when people can enter.
Half an hour later, the police announced on Twitter that they had not left her in the landslide zone anyway, claiming this was deemed inappropriate and referred to the demanding weather conditions.
Just after 6 o’clock the police arrive with a correction:
– Both the Sea King dog, dog handler, and rescuer have now been inside the landslide area. He ran a building materials search to no avail.
Still not possible on foot
It was Wednesday night that police stated that they were considering sending a dog to the area of the landslide. Then task leader Dag Andre Sylju stated that the biggest challenge in the search is that crews are unable to enter the area of the landslide.
– We would like to go in there, but we cannot, because it is simply too dangerous for the crews, he said.
More than 24 hours after the massive landslide that took place around 04:00 on Wednesday night, no one has been able to enter the areas most affected by the landslides on foot, the so-called red zone.
– During the night we have used drones and helicopters that they have applied. It has been a variable flight time, so the police helicopter has been going up and down. But Sea King has risen, says Knudsen.
Since the emergency services were notified of the landslide, helicopters have continuously monitored the site of the landslide and have been on the lookout for signs of people who may be in the area of the landslide.
Rescued dog
At 02:00 pm on Thursday night, the message arrived that a dog had been found at the scene of the accident. It turned out to be the Zajka family dog, whom the owners had to leave were evacuated. The couple Anna and Jørgen Sandman were evacuated by helicopter, but Zajka was not allowed to join; people had to be given priority.
The dog is in good condition and will be reunited with the family on Thursday.
A few meters from being taken by the landslide: – The road cracked in front of us
– Of course, it was absolutely fantastic to receive that message tonight. We have been very nervous and we seemed to be hoping for a miracle to happen. Luck has been with us today, even though we lost everything we possess in the landslide, Sandman writes in a text message to Dagbladet.
Operations manager Knudsen tells Dagbladet that the dog was in a house that has apparently moved many hundreds of meters from where it originally was.
– There are additional searches in the area where it was found, she says.
The dog that Zajka rescued from the crash site: – Absolutely fantastic
Nine buildings have collapsed
There are still ten people who have not been accounted for after the landslide.
A total of nine buildings have collapsed. This implies a total of 31 housing units, according to Knudsen.
The Gjerdrum church will keep the village doors open in the coming days for those who miss someone. Parish priest Jakob Furuseth claims that the church in Gjerdrum will be open, and that the rector will ensure that priests are available for those in need, both with the evacuees in the hotels and in the open church.
The municipality of Gjerdrum has already established a family center at the Clarion Hotel and Congress Center in Gardermoen. This is intended as an offer for those who miss someone in connection with the landslide.
Dagbladet follows the case and is continually updated.
