Odd Naustdal, Aker Solutions communications worker, confirms to E24 that there has been an explosion in the yard of Aker Solutions (formerly Kvaerner Stord) in Stord in western Norway.

– I don’t have much to say so far, but I confirm that there has been an explosion. Gas ignited in a sewer in the patio area. We are working to get an overview of the situation, Naustdal explains.

The message about the explosion arrived at 11:47 a.m. and five people close to the explosion were sent to the occupational health service to investigate the extent of the damage.

– They have been sent to the occupational health service, so there are minor injuries at the moment, he explains.

No person should be seriously injured in the incident.

Police and fire brigade in place.

Operation leader Helen Rygg Ims in the Southwest Police District reports at 2:10 p.m. that police and firefighters are on the scene.

At 12:29, the police were notified of the gas explosion. According to the Stord24 website, one of the five people with minor injuries was sent to the emergency room for a checkup.

Various projects in the yard

Naustdal says they don’t have an exact number for how many were in the yard, but that there are 1,700 permanent employees, several in the central office and some under contract.

Merger and new construction

The merger between Aker Solutions and Kvaerner was completed last year and in November the companies began operating as one. The Stord shipyard became part of Aker Solutions.
