Full storm hits Norway on Thursday:

From Wednesday night to Thursday there was a storm in parts of Norway. This led to road closures, a series of traffic accidents, landslides, floods and more than 3,000 people waking up without electricity.

At Gullfjellet in Bergen, 100 millimeters of precipitation fell in a short time.

Now a full storm is expected again, and is expected to make landfall on Thursday morning.

Polar storm riddled with myths

– We expect a complete storm. There will be a polar expression on Møre og Romsdal that will give the storm a boost. A polar storm occurs and they tend to surprise us, says on-duty meteorologist Isak Slettebø in Storm.

Polar storms are known to be erratic and violent. Before, they were also perceived as mysterious. Then there were often stories that they suddenly appeared in the Barents Sea and surprised the fishermen, who ended up sinking.

– Now they are not so mythical, but you never know for sure where they will be found and there are often big local differences, says Slettebø.

While it may be completely windless in central Bergen, for example, there may be a full storm outside.

Has consequences

Thursday morning he had problems. Several mountain passes are closed and the ferries are canceled.

On the E39 in Ålesund, a car got stuck in a corner due to snow and difficult driving conditions. In the southeastern police district, a tree fell on the road in Ådal on the E16, causing a traffic accident between two cars.

– The storm is expected to hit North Stadt on Thursday morning, but could have consequences for the entire country. It’s a north wind and it will hit 20 meters per second across Sørlandet, says the meteorologist.

It gets worse here

It is the north of western Norway and in the mountainous areas of northern eastern Norway that will feel the worst of the storm.

At the local level, the wind can reach 28 meters per second. Varsom has issued a yellow level warning for strong winds over much of southern Norway.

– It is very uncomfortable and then it is better to stay inside, says Slettebø.

The storm also brings a lot of precipitation.

– There may be 30 millimeters of precipitation north of Stadt, Nordfjord and in northern areas, he says.

In much of western Norway, Varsom has issued a yellow level flood warning.

“Meteorological cocktail”

At the same time as strong winds and rainfall are forecast, there is also a cold front to the south, which means that Sørlandet will experience a drop in temperature.

– Therefore, precipitation can turn into snow throughout the day down to the lowlands. Driving conditions will be quite cold and probably difficult, says the meteorologist.

The Western Police District warns against this on Twitter.

– Sudden drop in temperature is expected overnight throughout the district. There will be sleet, snow showers and storms with strong gusts of wind. Keep this in mind if you are going out to drive and you are not wearing a strap, writes the police district.

In northern Norway, a lot of snow is expected. In North Troms, there may be up to a foot of snow on Thursday.

– Actually, it is completely inconceivable how much time should be in a day in a country. It’s a true meteorological cocktail, says Slettebø.
