Gunhild (49) and Svein Arild Josvanger (59) were going to sell the car. They saw the scammer transfer 190,000 crowns. But only 50 øre entered the account.

The couple Gunhild (49) and Svein Arild Josvanger (59) from the municipality of Froland in Agder were going to sell their car on 5 August last year. Gunhild is receiving disability benefits and wanted more money to have something to work with. They had bought it on the lease for 161,000 crowns and were going to sell it for 190,000 to earn some additional crowns.

It was not painless. They met someone who wanted to buy the car in Harebakken, on the outskirts of Arendal. They met and the buyer was allowed to test drive the car. He said he wanted to buy it.

– We both sat down and watched him transfer 190,000 kroner to our account. He went in and paid and the message appeared confirming that the money had been transferred. We also checked his ID to see that he was who he claimed to be, Gunhild tells Nettavisen.

Agderposten was the first to mention the case.

Having done this, they signed the necessary contracts and transferred the car to the buyer. They also knew that it could take up to three days before the money arrived. The day after the sale, Gunnhild went to the online bank to check if the money had arrived. They had. The only problem was that he had entered a much smaller sum, that is, 50 øre.

– We went directly to the police station and fortunately we entered as it was a large sum, says Svein Arild.

Luck and bad luck

They met an old friend from Gunhild’s childhood who worked there. Therefore, they received good help from her. The childhood friend tried to call Arendal’s auto experts, but got no response.

When they had been in a phone queue for an hour and a half, Svein Arild went to the auto experts to find out why they took so long. They eventually discovered that the car had been transferred to a dealer in Drammen on the same day as the sale.

– The car dealer did not check the background of the car before buying it from the scammer, says Svein Arild.

– much that it rained

The day before, the fraudster had contacted a car dealer in Oslo who reacted to the sale.

The seller in Oslo reacted, among other things, to the fact that the man was willing to significantly reduce the price. He also noted that the car had changed ownership three times the same day and that prior to this it had come out in Finn.no in the Arendal district at a significantly higher price, writes Agderposten.

– In general, it rained a lot here, says the car dealer to the newspaper.

Therefore, he had informed RSA Bil that he suspected him of being a scammer, the couple say. RSA is a safe offering for used cars.

– It is very strange that the Drammen car dealer did not realize this. I should have been suspicious of the sale. He said he didn’t understand it until the next day, says Svein Arild.

I should have understood it was a scam

The couple found it strange that the Drammen car dealership didn’t realize it was a scam. They think you could understand it by looking at the price of the car, which had dropped from 190,000 to 135,000; You could also consult with automotive experts.

– On the same day this happened, a similar car was on sale for 209,900 at RSA Bil in Drammen. Used cars are usually 20,000 crowns below the price. So you should have realized something was wrong when it sold for 135,000 kroner, says Svein Arild.

The car dealer’s lawyer, Andrè Marthinussen Larsen, writes in his response to the conciliation council in Drammen, that the dealer carried out all the normal and necessary routines to check that the seller was indeed registered as the owner of the car and that there was no liens on the automobile in the Personal Property Registry.

The lawyer also writes that when it comes to the vehicle price of NOK 135,000, so obviously it was not so low that the car dealer should have reacted.

Civil lawsuit

The couple have now started a civil lawsuit against the car dealer who they believe should be better. The car is also for sale at Finn through the car dealer, although it is a legal case.

– I called the car dealer who had purchased the car to inform them of the lawsuit. He then tried to work out a deal so that we could get the money from the sale of the car that was left after he had deducted his expenses, says Svein Arild.

Car dealer response says:

“The complainants apparently claim that the defendant has acted in violation of what is normal in the industry, but this assertion is directly incorrect. The complainant (the car dealer) has done what can reasonably be expected of him and has verified the public records that are available. ”

Disappointed

They are also disappointed in the actions of the police. They have struggled to get in touch with the investigator and have not been called to inform them of what is going on with the case. They have therefore actively contacted the police to obtain this information themselves.

– We called the Arendal police to find out if they had contacted the Trondheim police, where the scammer is from. They hadn’t called and said no because they thought Trondheim police had enough to do, the couple say.

Leave on the phone

Svein Arild also called the scammer to speak to him, but when he heard Svein Arild’s voice, he hung up.

– We thought it was disgusting that the man had a plan to deceive us for a long time. He had contacted multiple buyers before even buying the car himself, the couple say.
