Fox breaks up with Donald Trump:

On Wednesday, Dagbladet wrote about several high-profile anchors and former Fox News supporters distancing themselves from Trump and his attempts to reverse the election result. The mood between the outgoing president and the news channel has been bad since the channel announced that Joe Biden won the US presidential election.

Trump now seems more enthusiastic about outlets even further to the right, such as One America News Network (OAN) and Newsmax, writes The Guardian. Recently, he has shared various media articles and live streams.

Postdoctoral fellow in media studies Magnus Hoem Iversen from the University of Bergen believes that these media may have a more important place because of the Trump presidency.

– He as president has promoted a normalization of thoughts and ideas to the extreme right. One America News Network has quite a few conspiracies in print, including about the pandemic and the election result. It’s become easier to speak out loud about these things in public, Iversen tells Dagbladet.

Media platforms like One America News Network and Newsmax describe themselves as pro-Trump and are no strangers to publishing conspiracy theories and criticism of mainstream media. Lately, his coverage has been marked by false accusations that the presidential election was stolen and that the crown pandemic is a hoax.

Among other things, Trump has praised One America News and called it a great channel, writes The Hollywood Reporter.

Magnus Hoem Iversen says he is not new to media platforms large and small on the far right, in the United States.

– The reason for this is a greater distrust in the right-wing media and a highly polarized society. Those who talk about the crisis of confidence in Norway are nonsense, because here people trust the media. In the United States, it has been very divided for a long time; Either you trust FOX or CNN, Iversen tells Dagbladet.

He says the distance between Trump and Fox can now be used by new media platforms.

– Some will now probably try to cultivate the role of outright Trump-friendly channel, towards which Fox has tended, says Iversen.

Trump-TV?

Iversen, on the other hand, doesn’t think this spells the end for Fox News.

– The interesting thing about FOX is that they have been divided for a long time. In a way, it was Trump-TV and CNN at the same time. They have ridden two horses and that may have caused a dissonance. FOX will probably go back to the way it was before Trump; a clear republican voice. But keep in mind that it is not just the far right that voted for Trump, so this is probably not the end of the channel, he says.

During Trump’s 2016 election campaign, theories abounded that he would create his own television channel if he lost. The US news site Axios writes that it may be at least as likely now, and that Trump wants to take up the fight to become the leading newscaster from the right.

– It is not unlikely that you have plans for it. However, I don’t think I will do a cable TV channel, it will probably be too expensive and slow. It will probably be more of a website with a modern start-up and broadcast of these public gatherings, says Iversen.

He emphasizes that this is just speculation.

– Nobody knows what Trump thinks, but what we do know is that there is a market for that and that Trump likes to be in the spotlight.
