– We have made a new discovery of a dead person. It has been found in the same area as discovery number three. The two people have now been transported out of the area, says task force leader Knut Hammer.

Early Saturday, the discovery of two more deaths was reported. Also on Friday, one dead was found in the landslide. On Saturday night, the police announced that it was Eirik Grønolen (31) who was found dead on Friday.

Six people are still missing and the police continue the operation in the hope of finding survivors.

These have died and are missing after the landslide.

It is with great regret that we must declare that another deceased person has been found. I think of those waiting for answers about their loved ones, and I can only imagine how burdened they are right now, says Deputy Mayor Leif Haugland in Gjerdrum Township.

Fire Chief Kenneth Wangen of the fire service says finds of people have been made where expected.

– As we identify the finds, we can connect them to where people have lived, so that we can search as efficiently as possible overnight. We are still looking for survivors, says operations manager Wangen.

– The needle in the haystack

It says the deceased who was found Saturday night was found in the area where police gave them information to search.

– It was the intelligence of the police and the marking of the dogs, which made us find the last person.

By intelligence is meant testimony, emergency calls in the early stages, as well as drone footage.

– It’s a pretty massive material, says Wangen.

– The starting point of all our search is to find an area, see what house it is and try to match the place where the house was before. And then the dogs come in to make more careful marks, so that we can detect more precisely, because this is like looking for the needle in the haystack.

Task leader Hammer tells Dagbladet that extensive intelligence work has been carried out prior to the avalanche pit searches.

– Extensive mapping and intelligence work has been done to find out who is missing and where they have been in the buildings we are looking for. Building on the findings we’ve made now, we work determinedly toward the buildings and use floor plans to look in the right place, says Hammer.

It will be applied overnight

Early Saturday, rescue teams stated that they expect to work late into the night.

– Now we have some points of interest that we will explore during the night, and we must look for them. We hope it takes a few hours. And then it is important that we do not look at random, and that the injury site can rest, so that new smells can emerge, so that the dogs can mark and it is not us who mark, says Wangen.

Emphasize that the job is risky.

– It is a demanding and risky task. It is as good as can be. We are trying to intervene with an evacuation route for the Armed Forces, a paver that is shutting down. It is postponed until tomorrow morning. But this job is not without risk, I must emphasize.

– We have a number of security measures, but they will not eliminate the risk, says Wangen.
