– This is the darkest day in Trier since WWII, says Mayor Wolfram Leibe.
At a press conference Tuesday night, four people were confirmed dead. A child is among the dead.

The Volksfreund newspaper writes that the death toll is up to four. Police have confirmed that there is a child among them. In addition, at least 30 people must be injured.
Eyewitnesses tell SWR that the driver must have done it on purpose, driven at full speed and directed at people.
Police confirm that it is a 51-year-old German from the Trier area who is the alleged perpetrator. The man has a German background. He was arrested not far from the pedestrian street and is now being questioned.
The mayor of the city, Wolfram Leibe, spoke to the press in the afternoon:
– I walked downtown instead. It was absolutely shocking. There was a sneaker. The girl who owned it is dead, Leibe said.
– I do not want to speculate, but everyone asks: What makes a person do this? Of course, I don’t have an answer to that question, said the speaker Wolfram Leibe.
Immediately afterwards, all the schools in the city center were informed that the children were not allowed to go home alone, they all had to be picked up.
Asked people to stay away
On Twitter, the police asked that people stay away from the area.
Several people are injured after being hit by a car in the pedestrian street of Trier. Avoid the area, the police are on the scene together with other emergency services.
The car, a Range Rover, crashed into the pedestrian zone, according to eyewitnesses.
