Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main rival Benny Gantz agree to form a unifying government after months of political recessions.

The government deal was signed by the two on Monday, according to a joint announcement by the Likud and Blue and White parties.

Under the agreement, Gantz and Netanyahu will become prime minister, with 18 months each at the helm, Israeli media reports.

The first to leave is Netanyahu. Then Gantz takes over. While Netanyahu is prime minister, Gantz, who is the former defense chief, will serve as defense minister, according to the Maariv newspaper.

The newspaper also writes that a partial annexation of the Israeli-shocked West Bank will begin on July 1.

The annexation plans have met with vigorous protests from the international community as it will turn the Palestinian area into a mosaic of Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law.

Annexation will also deprive Palestinians of some of the most fertile areas.

Over the course of just a year, Israel has held three elections, all of which ended without any of the National Assembly blocks obtaining a majority large enough to form a government.

There has been speculation if Netanyahu would print a fourth election, but with Monday’s agreement this has been avoided.

Increased pressure

The eruption of the crown has increased pressure on Netanyahu and Gantz to establish a government in Israel.

Gantz also justified collaboration because the epidemic requires him to cooperate with Netanyahu, the longest serving prime minister in Israel.

However, by saying yes to Netanyahu, Gantz has lost several of his Blue and White alliance partners.

In January, Netanyahu was charged, among other things, with corruption, and experts say this has given him an even stronger reason to retain power.

According to the Haaretz newspaper, the deal gives Netanyahu a veto power when it comes to appointing a new state attorney.
