German soccer clubs breathed a sigh of relief Monday after several prominent politicians said they would not get in the way of the ball.

Various German media report that fighting activity can resume as soon as May 9. The premise is that empty stands are played.

Markus Söder and Armin Laschet, state ministers in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia respectively, said nothing can be taken for granted, but they look favorably on proposals launched by the German league (DFL).

The DFL expects authorities to reopen combat activity in the first half of May. May 9 and 16 are mentioned as possible dates.

Prime Minister Laschet said Monday that a comprehensive hygiene and safety scheme must exist for soccer matches to be allowed again. Söder, for his part, declared that there may be activity as early as May 9.

“A soccer weekend is much more affordable than a weekend without it.”

At the same time, an important question is whether the German authorities are easing their national restrictions as of May 4. A clarification on the matter was announced after a meeting on April 30.

Health Minister Jens Spahn told Bild on Monday that fighting behind closed doors is definitely a possibility.

At the same time, it should be clarified to what extent and how often players and other club employees should be tested for viruses at the time football rolls around. To complete the current season, it is speculated that 20,000 tests may be needed.
