At the same time that the flames rose from the building and the firefighters waged an intense battle to extinguish them, yesterday a medical team of eight people was in the middle of a heart operation in the operating room.

According to the Russian emergency department, the hospital, located in Blagoveshchensk, Russia, was built in 1907.

“The fire spread like lightning through the wooden roofs,” the ministry said in a statement.

– I did everything

120 people were evacuated from the hospital, but the team of eight was far from the first to do so.

They decided to complete the operation they were undergoing, which was an open heart operation.

“We had to do everything possible to save this patient, and we did everything,” says chief surgeon Valentin Filatov, according to the BBC.

To the timer

At the same time that the flames rose from the roof of the hospital, the operation was able to continue thanks to an emergency cable that entered the operating room on the ground floor, as well as fans that kept the smoke out.

The medical team took two hours to complete the operation and, once the patient was evacuated from the burning building, they were able to establish that the operation had been successful.

According to the BBC, a short circuit is believed to have caused the fire.
