But the oil giant has not yet ruled out a possible connection between the two incidents that have hit the Melkøya plant in a short time.

The fire that broke out at the Equinor plant outside Hammerfest on Monday was located in an area other than the gas leak that struck the same plant two weeks earlier. Equinor informs E24.

The oil company does not rule out a possible link to direct questions about whether the incidents can be viewed in context. Communications consultant Eskil Eriksen says they need more data on the table first:

– The gas leak and the turbine fire occurred in different places in the plant, he says.

– And it will not be correct of me to speculate in possible contexts until we have carried out the necessary investigations and concluded on the investigation of the fire, continues Eriksen.

I don’t know when the plant can open

Equinor is still working Wednesday to map the damage to the plant.

– It will probably take some time before we have an overview and can say something about the scope. Until further notice, the facility will be closed, Eriksen says.

The first reports of the fire came at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Then there was a thick development of smoke that obscured parts of Hammerfest.

Equinor quickly shut down the plant and evacuated all personnel who did not assist the emergency services with firefighting work. The fire was confirmed to be extinguished at 11:30 p.m. the same day.

You must provide information to the police.

On Tuesday, it became clear that both police and the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority will investigate the fire, which shop stewards describe as very serious.

The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority also made headlines on Tuesday, with its feature that the fire was “one of the most serious incidents in Norwegian oil history.”

Equinor comments on the proposal to E24 as follows:

– This was a serious incident, and we will investigate it to clarify the course of events and the causal links to the fire.

– We will arrange for the police and the Norwegian Oil Safety Authority to obtain the information they need in their investigation and investigation, says Eriksen.
